I agree completely. He can even make the web font the least preferable.

TIL there's an optional update for windows 7 that adds emoji to Segoe UI. Let's see if Firefox will use the glyphs, since Lucida and Helvetica are preferred fonts on xkcd for some obscure reason. 😒

[edit] Yay, most of the emoji show up now.

I asked why a certain lady left, and it gave me the image of a female-looking poodle.

Yeah, I figured she was a bitch.

edit: I also asked about the weather 3 times*. First it gave me feet (weather to walk outside in? or weather worth walking away from?), then it gave me a picture of a plane seat and a sun, and then, just in case I still didn't get that I'll have to travel if I wanted sun, it gave me the picture of a cloud.

* it's definitely not true that you always get the same answers, tested by simply clicking the button several times...

"yum install google-android-emoji-fonts" improved the situation in Fedora. I still lack at least one of the characters it generates, but it works well enough now that I can conclude that this thing is rather boring.

Naw. Individual outputs aren't necessarily funny, but sharing the bizarrely apropos ones is going to be quite a fun game.

Not really Ignored. The question is somehow encoded in the generated url. For example, this: http://xkcd.com/1525/#eyJxIjoiSG93IGRpZCB5b3UgbGlrZSB0aGUgc3dpbW1pbmcgcG9vbD8iLCJhIjpbIiYjeDFGNDBEOyIsIiYjeDFGNDQ0OyJdfQ== will allways show the question "How did you like the swimming pool?"

Not only the question, but also the answer!

Anyone clicking on that link should always get the snake+mouth result.
Clicking on the ASK button again changes the part of the URL that encodes the result.

gdouros-symbola-fonts worked for me on Fedora with Google Chrome. Had to restart Chrome of course.

Yeah, it looks like it could be fun to manipulate the results. Especially if you send them to people who don't know how this works. E.g.:

Why should I play this game?

Which is, of course, a reference to this.

OK, I'm going to come right out and say it: these emoji do not belong in Unicode. They're not well-defined glyphs that belong to a writing system, they're just an arbitrary set of more or less cutesy pictures. (Yeah, yeah, I know that's what the CJK ideograms were originally, but they've had time to be codified into a limited set). Where will it end?

Discuss.

orthogon wrote:Well, the original lucky 8-balls give a random answer to a yes/no question, and hook into our human urge to find meaning in the random. This 8-ball goes further in that it gives a random answer to an open question. However, giving such an answer in English is basically what the Turing Test is all about, i.e. not something you'd knock up in javascript for the sake of a webcomic. So enter the emoji: this allows the open question to be "answered" in an enigmatic way using a random combination of pictures, and leaves it up to the human to find meaning in it. (Now I've described it like that, I realise that it's basically what Tarot is all about).

The advantage to Tarot is that the images are designed to be symbolic of various core ideas in Western culture, tending to be much less concrete overall. This in general makes them more applicable to questions. Though actually, I'm not sure: do people prefer answers to be vague, or cryptic?

I was contemplating what Tarot would look like if each card was distilled down into a single emoji-style image, and realized you would basically end up with the icons on the Alethiometer (Golden Compass/Northern Lights, by Pullman). As I recall, the way the Alethiometer works is (somewhat) similar to how people may read Tarot (only realizing this now since I read His Dark Materials before I got interested in Tarot). I guess the only thing that makes the emojic 8 ball less useful than these other devices is its vocabulary (and the fact that the Alethiometer is a fictional device with divinatory ability.)

The emojic 8 ball weighs in:

I thought it was a woman's head, zzz representing sleep, and a falling leaf, so the answer was something like 'Sleep with woman?! Leave.'

I asked it again what I should do now, and it told me to leave (with an emoji of two falling leaves.) So I reloaded it until it told me to computer.

OK, I just checked and I do have the Segoe UI Symbol font installed (as well as Segoe UI, Light, and Semibold). That is the font I need to see the emoji characters, right? Running Firefox 37.0.2 on Windows 7x64. Not seeing the emoji.

Or do I need some Firefox plugin to make this work?
