Not sure anyone needs to these days, freemium apps pretty much cover the same repetitive actions.

GOOMHR

I was just explaining to my son about Tamagotchi and other virtual pets we had as kids.

"Huh," he said, and then continued to play his game.

neopets.com used to be a good one, back in 2001. (My neopet was created 2 days before Sept. 11)
But as with all good things, it got sold to someone who had more passion for the money than for the concept.

My brother invented the virtual pet in about 1992: it was a program called "Fish Simulator" which ran on a DOS PC. It used the real-time clock to simulate various processes: the fish had to be fed regularly and the tank would fill up with fish poo unless it was cleaned. Neglect of either could lead to death of the fish. At the time we thought this was a hilarious and absurd program to have written, but we missed the significance of an important clue: his then girlfriend, now my sister-in-law, took a copy to university and became addicted to it, rushing home from lectures to feed and her virtual fish and clean its tank. A few years later everyone was taken aback by the success of the Tamagotchi, but we ought to have realised. I'm sure many other people invented virtual pets before my brother's effort - no doubt Turing himself had one running on the Colossus - but it's interesting to have first-hand insight into the experience of not realising the value or importance of an idea until somebody else makes a fortune out of it.

Pajitnov (the Tetris guy) came out with El-Fish in 1993, actually. But 1985's Little Computer People was a pioneer in the field. (A massive Little Computer People hive wouldn't be too hard to set up, I suppose.)

I remember a page on the mid 90s (www was funnier then) dedicated to destroy tamagotchis. The guy accepeted donations (of tamagotchis) and suggestions on how to do it (burned, smashed, dropped from height) and posted pictures (photographed and scanned).

somewhere it's cached, they say

I had one of those tamagotchi clones that you could connect together with another one and they would do battle, several of my friends had them too. I remember that you had to be really careful about maintaining contact during a battle (it worked over a 1-wire bus or something similar, because it only had two contacts), because if you lost contact at the wrong moment the thing would get corrupted and you'd lose your pet. Mean people with weak pets would adopt a kamikaze strategy and deliberately disconnect half-way through to try and kill your pet. It soon got to the point where no-one would ever take the risk of fighting a pet much weaker than theirs, so it was quite tedious to gain XP in the early stages.

I also remember trying to convince my parents to feed mine when I was at school after they got banned for being too distracting in lessons. They refused. It died.

Also, this is the best comic in weeks IMO - nice one Randall!

We had that. Also, the first couple of ones died because we hadn't got the time on the right am/pm, so it was only awake at night :P

The real question is what happens when some of the Tamagotchis realize they're living in the Matrix.

What happens when the One frees the others and they begin a a rebellion?

So who would win in a battle between a hive of trillions of tamagotchi and an infinite series of pikachu?

Sprite_tm actually implemented this.
He currently has a hive of 13 virtual Tamagotchis running. There is an AI (state machine) taking care of the feeding etc. He made a web interface so you can take a look.
There also is an article about it on hackaday and a video on youtube. Unfortunately I can't post any links because my message will be tagged as spam. Just google for ' Jeroen Domburg Implementing the Tamagotchi Singularity'.
