Gryffindor Spice, Hufflepuff Spice, Ravenclaw Spice and Slytherin Spice?

Surely the question mean to ask for the names of the Four Seasons, not the Four Spices, which any Vivaldi fan will tell you were Tommy DeVito, Bob Gaudio, Charles Calello and Joe Long.

Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Wood, surely.

Or maybe White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green.

Or was it Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Green?

I actually had to have explain xkcd explain the intended humor of her last attempt. I still feel like I'm missing the joke. Otherwise, yeah, we've kinda seen this comic before?

So,
sets of 7 are undistinguishable,
sets of 5 are undisitnguishable.

It would be really horrible if this continues and all sets of one become undistinguishable.

OK, then, seeing as this is nerd city:

How many computer programs / apps can you identify that have "spice" in their name?

The obvious one is the electronic circuit simulator. Go find some more.

Does the set of all sets which are indistinguishable contain itself?

I can't tell.

If the sets are indistinguishable, then surely the object comprising the collection of such sets would not strictly be a set, since a set can't have more than one of the same element.

It's also not exactly the same issue as 1417, because there are only four riders of the apocalypse.

So, the Scary Extinction would be the one 225 million years ago between the Permian and Triassic ages.

They are still in the set of comics where he mixes sets of things because they have become indistinguishable.
Though this one does have the tone of being more intentional than 1417 was, perhaps taking a jab at occasions where someone may be called upon to summon the names of the Spice Girls, as if to invoke some incantation which would lead to increased social acceptation.
Whatever the case, she probably does know the names of the Spice Girls, having been in on such incantations on numerous occasions over the years, leading her to realize how silly and antiquated such things are. In an effort to enact social change she is attempting to showcase the absurdity of the thing by intentionally invoking other similar-sounding sets of things.

Either that or Randall is still infatuated with the Spice Girls, as evidenced by the several (recent) comics which incorporate them, but he is trying to dissuade his audience from believing this through the clever use of comics which attempt to poke fun at them.

But it does make sense as a direct continuation of 1417 - possibly after he's finally given up.

I don't get how being able to name everyone in a mediocre 90s band is even a thing, unless you're already known to be a fan. One member of a band, sure, lots of people know who Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, Freddie Mercury, and Gwen Stefani were associated with, but is the public really expected to know all the musicians in the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, or No Doubt?

I guess there's a few acts where many people can name every member: the Beatles, U2, Simon & Garfunkel. But seriously? Would anyone put the Spice Girls in that company?

Yes. You're not expected to knpw their real names, but their aliases were quite distinctive. Well, if you lived at that time, which isn't that sure i guess.

Yeah I was around. I do remember those ridiculous aliases now that they've been spelled out here - but it still seems strange to think that this would be trivia worth knowing, or worth finding out if someone else knows. Seems more useful to know, e.g., the four languages of Switzerland or the six types of quarks.

I do a little better on the Ninja Turtles, in that I can name them all. Because, yeah, I was alive at the time. But if you expect me to do better than chance at matching them up with their preferred weapons and bandanna colors....

Five spices? Those would be parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme and pepper.

The Scary Extinction must be scary indeed if it's scarier than the Baby Extinction.
