1561: "Water Phase Diagram"

Postby Xanthir » Fri Aug 07, 2015 5:08 am UTC

Image
Alt: "Vanilla Ice was produced in small quantities for years, but it wasn't until the 90s that experimenters collaborated to produce a sample that could survive at room temperature for several months. "

...this is another comic with a strange visual artifact. There appears to be a tiny washed-out version of phase diagram just under the phrase "water vapor". Weird.

So I guess the joke is that Vanilla Ice is a phase of actual ice? Baby? And that Queen is Under Pressure? Where does Bowie come in? Where are Messrs. Cube and -T?

Under Pressure was a collaboration between Queen and Bowie.

I'm kind of surprised ice VII-XI aren't the Sp-ice Girls.

Ah, that's what that is. I thought I was just imagining something on my laptop monitor for a bit there.

The ice was finally formed in the 90s after researchers "stopped, colaborated and listened" according to a source working on the project.

I'm guessing that's the diagram Randall was tracing to start this comic & accidentally left in.

Most researchers believe that the Queen phase derives its unique properties from the presence of Mercury, but there have been many attempts since 1991 to achieve similar effects with a Mercury-free mixture.

So Vanilla Ice will always remain Ice no matter the temperature? Think we need to test that.

There's also no reference to Ice-Ic, -IV, -VII, -VIII, and -X through -XVI.
There's also no reference to "Ice-nine".

Has anyone explicitly mentioned that Ice, Ice, Baby was based around a sample of the riff from Under Pressure?

I'd like to see a progressive/psychadelic pop/rock/hip-hop crossover supergroup formed from a collaboration between Ice Cube, Roger Waters and Steam. They could call themselves "Triple Point".

Equally, heavy water may be water, but deuterium oxide has no place on this diagram.

Given that the diagram in the mustard appears to have the vertical axis pointing upwards, I presume that the having pressure increase downwards in the comic was done so that the reader sees the humorous additions last.

When I were a lad (well, an engineering student at least), such a diagram was called a "steam chart". There was a beautiful one included as a kind of "centrefold" in the Thermodynamics data book we all had at university. I was disappointed to find that I'd lost both it and the data book at some point, whilst retaining such useless data books as the one detailing the MIPS processor's instruction set.

My professor had a Pressure/Temperature/Volume 3d chart made of wood.

It made such an impression on me that I still picture it in my head whenever I think about a thermodynamic problem.

Not in this thread, no. Of course it is mentioned in detail on Explain xkcd.

The combination of a webcomic, especially in black-and-white line art, and Ice Ice Baby/Under Pressure never fails to remind me of this.

Regarding the lack of reference to Ice-xi, I believe such a referencee would be ice-a-nine.

Which brings up the anti-vaxxers. Are they also anti-Queen, and if so, is it because they believe Mercury is still present?
