1562: "I in Team"

Postby sween64 » Mon Aug 10, 2015 5:52 am UTC

Title text: There's no "I" in "VOWELS".

It took me longer than I care to admit, to understand the joke, purely because I missed the final set out of quotation marks.

My preferred smart-ass response was:

"There is when the team wins."

And for bad spellers, there's an "I" in "TIEM."

Randall must hate those "welcome to our ool" signs.

It's just an expression, for goodness sake. Fine, I'll get off your lawn now. Wait, everyone understands I'm not literally on a lawn? Good.

I've often heard the response of "but there's a U in "c*nt"

I would totally let Shinozaki Ai be on my team. I'm not sure what's wrong with everyone who says this.

I once took the time to look up translations of "team" into a couple dozen languages, many of which in fact do have an "i" .

Then there was some TV ad in which the athlete's rejoinder is "There ain't no 'we,' neither."

Hands up everyone who's boss's idea of "teamwork" is basically "Everyone agrees with me -- and does what they're told."

Well, yes, but do any of them contain a first person singular pronoun in that language as a substring?

"But there is an 'm' & an 'e' and that spells 'me' " is another good response.

For the orthographically aware, it works to point out that the vertical in the 'T' is an 'I', and the 'M' contains two copies of an 'I, so in fact there are three 'I's visible in "TEAM"'. This only really works for the upper-case version of "TEAM", of course.

Phonetically, there's a /i/ in "team".

well, google translate won't translate "I" into languages which require a verb before setting the pronoun. I tried "I love my team" and was unable to find a language which has either the translation of "I" or the first-person singular equivalent of "I love" into a part of "team."

Unexpected "I in Team" in the bagging area.

Edited to add:
I suppose a response could be like:
"There's no I in Team"
"TEAM MEETING! U not included. Buzz off"
I'm alive because the cats are alive.
The cats are alive because I'm alive.
Specious.

Three.

Strictly it's two, although "Shut the fuck up" does have three.

I'm wondering about the origins of this phrase. Pinker explains that most nonsensical phrases like that originally had a religious swear word, which was replaced by a sexual obscenity when the latter became more offensive than the former. Hence "Fuck you" which developed from "Damn you". I presume "What the fuck?" came from "What the hell?"; and I can believe that that was itself a shortened form of "What in the name of hell?" or similar. But I can't work out what "shut the hell up" would have meant.

I came across something interesting for Swedish where I = Jag, and Team = Lag. There's no Jag in Lag, but it's pretty damn close enough to create some similar interesting metaphors.

No, no, we've been reading it wrong. It's "there's no eye in team," which means we all need to play blindfolded.

Ah. Well, if you like, -you- shut the f*ck up!

Perhaps we should discontinue this subthread before it starts to behave as the discussion it was intended to illustrate.

There's also no "we" in "team". Or "us".

Oh, and there's "am", which is as first person singular as it gets.

Also, I found this paper on the linguistics of "the hell" - they argue that there are two distinct usages.

There's no 't' in China.
There is in North China, South China, East China, West China, Central China, and Outer China, but despite all that, there's still no 't' in China.
