1568: "Synonym Movies 2"

Title Text: There's also the TV show based on the hit Hot and Cold Music books: Fun With Chairs, Royal Rumble, Knife Blizzard, Breakfast for Birds, and Samba Serpents.

Hey! Those Tropical Boaters films aren't synonym titles at all!

I mean, seriously. They ought to be something like... I dunno...

"Unlucky Spooky Boat," or "Corpse Box," or "By the Earth Cliff."

Verily, I had to think mighty hard about Tropical Boaters before it finally clicked.

The alt text still eludes me. Hot and ... Oh, right.

"Tropical Boaters" sounds so much nicer than "Naval Rapists."

And the "Professor Whip" ones aren't any better.

I really enjoyed the first "Synonym Movies" that Randall made a couple of weeks ago, but this sequel (oh, the irony!) is no where as good.

These ones are simplifications, not synonyms.
Fail, Randall.

This. Literally none of these are synonyms. I have to wonder if Randall even understands what the word "synonym" means.

And even more so, THIS.

The first set were weak enough. Hopefully there won't be any more.

On the other hand, if you read it against the Synonym Movies forum thread, this is Randall trolling both people who accuse him of failing to understand what a synonym is, and those who correctly point out that there are only 3 films in the Professor Whip franchise. Which makes it less of a fail. Though that does come with the assumption that Randall reads the fora and cares even slightly about what's said here...

As for Professor Whip, I still say that it should've been Hoosier Hank.

Who knows this is Randall trolling you because this is actually a failed sequel!

Perhaps this comic generates more discussion despite the lack of originality. It's a nice (unintended) social experiment.

Shouldn't the first Professor Whip movie simply be titled "Pillagers of the Misplaced Box?"

And the last one should be "Professor Whip and the Empire of the Glassy Head-Bone".

Though judging by the general lack of synonyms here, perhaps we should just go with "Professor Whip and the Magical, Marvellous Fridge of Invincibility".

That's what I was thinking. Though I believe recent home-video releases have retitled it.

See, for example: http://smile.amazon.com/Indiana-Jones-R ... 00GIWIPVA/

Either way, though, "Pillagers of" should be in there.

Nonono, the last Professor Whip film was definitely Professor Whip Looks For A Cup. Nothing more was made after that because it would just be terrible and ruin the series.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I don't care if they're actually synonyms or not... The subtitles are hilarious. Box of God, in particular, got me. You posters need to loosen up a bit.

Nicknaming things and then using those nicknames as synonyms sounds like a fair enough method (Jedi would have been a lot harder otherwise), and it does make for some hilarious titles, but I feel like this series of comics would have been even better as a continuation of the great 'ten-hundred most common words' stuff Randall has been doing.

Has Randall officially reached the point now where he's actively trying to chase people away from XKCD so he doesn't have to make it anymore?

I would guess not.

See every other time that people asked similar questions after individual comics flopped for them.

But that doesn't really narrow it down. Basically every organized military force in human history, until quite recently, really liked them some rape.

Me too.

That is, these "synonyms" aren't, though they are easier to grok than several of the more synonymous titles from last time.

Re: Professor Whip Is In Another Movie - In an interview with Spielberg, Lucas & Ford (?) after making it, the three admitted that after the third Professor Whip movie, they agreed making another sequel involving aliens would be a really bad idea - and telling the interviewer this after having done so, their body language (they sure weren't going to say it) indicated they agreed with their younger selves that indeed it was a really bad idea.

Puncher? Oh, never mind, I think I get it. Again, not a synonym but a description.

But then, his definition of synonym is a bit... ok, now this one works!

Well, there would be no synonym for a proper name, so a description is really your only option.

Except that most proper names are words which have meaning in their own right, or at least originated as such...

Point taken. Rocky, especially, if taken as a descriptive word rather than a name, does seem to lend itself well to a useful synonym. However, using any of the synonyms for rocky does not lend itself easily to a reader identifying the movies.

Some license has to be taken for effective communication and humor. Though an argument could be made for choosing a movie series that better fits the criteria.

Really the main problem with this series is the "synonym movies" title, when the content is much more about bathos than actual synonymy. Which of course makes me wonder why these two comics are called that: Is Synonym Movies itself a transformed title of sorts?

That's the game of it, though. Though honestly, I would have recognized that in about the same time it took to recognize the version in the actual comic ("The Boxer" is also a movie.)

I was starting to wonder what you could get if you started feeding the likes of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" into one of those iterative translation thingies – you know, that uses an auto-translator to iteratively swap the language of a particular phrase such that hilarity ensues.

...Turns out I can't find one that works anymore. Every one I find seems to be dead, either due to deprecated APIs or services or something. Surely someone's got one up and running somewhere?

EDIT: TransPerfect in the Bad Translator still works, but only for ten iterations. Alas, nothing more enlightening than "Belstigen Léus Tpfer, and uwica of miertelny kady". ("Harass the potter and the mortal sanctifies" comes up before the German translation, which irretrievably mangles the first part; Polish takes care of the rest.)

You know, I think he missed the best option for Harry Potter. He should have gone with "Potboy", a boy who makes pots.
In all fairness...
