I put a red light on the non-stilted platform, and now it has a turtle and a cactus! (My computer hasn't been on very much lately, so it hasn't had long to grow.)

I like how in this garden, everything seems to be looking toward the pedestal-cat, like she is their ruler.
In Svithjod, there stands a rock. It is 100 miles high and 100 miles wide. Once every 1000 years a little bird comes to this rock to sharpen its beak. One time, I changed just the last sentence of this signature, and lots of you noticed. Image

I have a couple of Cueballs with a turtle sale trying to compete against a unicorn (deer with a strategically placed stump) who is selling turtles, linsangs, and tulips. Looks like the right Cueball is having a rough time, as two of the turtles are attacking his face while a third bites his ankle.

Well, none of the other Garden critters can really sit comfortably atop a cactus...

You do have to wonder how they keep getting up there, though.

Yay, finally got some Beret Guy-in-a-Shrubs! And I was hoping to get a platform on my deer, but instead I got a deer on a platform. With an owl.

Now I have to decide if I want to get rid of the deer on the platform so you can see the stiltwalkers better. The stiltwalkers, by the way, have decided to show off my balancing several cats and owls each on their heads.

Meanwhile, Ponytail Girls are acting out the "O captain, my captain" scene from Dead Poets' Society.

That balloon is growing out of a plant, eh? I wonder if strings that grow out of plants get a string-segment-angle property from whatever they arise from. My stringy-thing-growing-from-flower-hilt #1 has finally sprouted its balloon after growing a segment at a time for 5 days. It resists the wind quite a bit more than the other balloons (more springy?) - at least more than my other balloons on strings of short segments. The long-string-segment balloons may be less blowy, but it's hard to judge because of the different string lengths. I really love the wind in my garden - it's, well, relaxing. :)
Image
I've also gotten a few flower hilts and a bloom on the right thanks to BlitzGirl's tip - thanks!

I'm glad I don't have any cats. They have eyes. Weird.

ETA: When I referred to "my stringy-thing-growing-from-flower-hilt #1" I meant that #1 to indicate that it was my leftmost flower hilt. The correct name for that type of hilt is "flower-hilt2". Of course my second flower hilt is a "flower-hilt1". Sorry for any confusion.

Baobabs, that angular stringy-thing is cool. I haven't gotten one that angular from a flower hilt. All of my flower stringythings so far are sort of gently curved and made of short segments. However, all my stringythings have come from hilt-1s, the flatter looking flower hilt. I haven't gotten strings from hilt-2s yet.

My most unexpected stringything produced a huge balloon in the UFO garden. Sadly I had to prune that one because it obscured too many things.

Eight, if you count BeretShrub. (How else do you explain a demi-Beret-guy growing out of a bush, gently swaying in the breeze?)

My Narnia garden seems to be stagnating - I keep trying to get it to fill in those two trees with the mostly-bare trunks, but instead, I get Mars rovers and linsangs and hybrid swans. And stiltGirl, but she's been there from almost the very beginning. It's a very Randall-esque version of Narnia.

Okay... this may just be a coincidence, but, the prevailing wind in my garden has mostly been left to right, but today it seems to be mostly coming from the right. A southerly hit here IRL this morning dropping the temperature, but before that, it's been mostly northerlies. Could there be some sort of umwelty weather thing going on? (The internet seems like magic to me, so I'm not very good at knowing when I'm saying something technologically absurd.)

Well, after tending to several gardens over a long period of time, I think it's time to put aside the pruning shears. But here are some of my favourites. These are the ones in which I was actively pruning towards certain goals:

The Kitty Garden, which took the most time to get to a place where I liked it. Originally, I was keeping all birds and cats, but the owls kept blocking the number of cats, so eventually it became mostly small birds and cats, and one of those insane balloons, which must be entertaining for the felines: http://xkcd.com/1663/#cb79b454-006f-11e ... 010a8e0019

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 9.04.35 AM.png

The Scrubland, which I had planned to be a grassland, but developed a rather nice collection of flowers: http://xkcd.com/1663/#76745c3c-0215-11e ... 010a8e000a

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 11.25.16 AM.png

And finally, my Narnia to Necropolis garden, which I like for its strange suggestion of a narrative. I only wish I'd gotten some more varied animals: http://xkcd.com/1663/#7fa4e588-fb9e-11e ... 010a8e000a

My garden which I had been tending for some time, but can no longer tend due to touching an ill-fated button to refresh firefox:
MyGarden.png

I have a pair of Megans who are set to defend my garden from invaders (like excessive branches on the tree they are on and the UFOs which appeared recently). There isn't much room on that platform, but they are determined to stand together!

I once had two WHGs swimming in the stream, but had inadvertently deleted one which got replaced by a stork. I also had another floating Megan, but accidentally deleted her during a more haphazard pruning session

I still have my gardens open and tend them occasionally, but they don't seem to be growing any previously-unseen objects. I guess we are probably done getting those at this point, not surprised.

UFO Garden has now reached a population of ten flying saucers. Other new features:

A couple of actual flying fish, which are my favorite flying critter but seem tricky to grow.
The desk made a spear and ran it straight through the Megan that was being abducted by a UFO. Megan on her left is very alarmed.
A cat is attempting to murder my hatless swordMegan by leaning against her legs as she balances on the very edge of a platform.

StiltGirl is now wearing seven hats at once. When she leans to the right the tree-deer nibbles at them.

I think I've posted maybe once here, but had to pop in for this one because it's just too fun. I have maybe 10 gardens going at once now. My favorites are my experiments on (almost) identical light placement and judicious pruning. I let them start in their own direction, then pruned to emphasize what was trending.

One's trying to be a Disney movie:

One redefines "deer stand":

And one... one's this:

It's been a while since I posted on this thread so I thought I'd do a little update. Last time I showed the Cuegarden I had recently trimmed back the stack of little tables held by Middlecue. After a lot of growing and pruning, Middlecue has a full tower of tables once more:

Spoiler:

My favorite object on the stack is the Jackalope (bunny + branch) just above Middlecue's head. A close second is the romantic snake midway up.

This one is great. But it gave me one moment of horror when, in the screenshot, it seemed that one flying girl had just bashed her head in on that birdbath. Painful, to say the least. Hopefully, the effect is not so... visceral when the wind is blowing! (I'm also loving the cat on the tentacle plant!)

Alas, my Garden no longer grows anything. In fact for a few weeks I could not get the link to work at all (it has been up on my screen since it started, in various iterations -- best screen saver EVAR!). Today the base landscape reappeared, and I could activate the lamps, but nothing grows. I miss my blue-light Things With Tentacles especially! Is the Garden now officially inactive, or is the hiatus temporary? If it's permanent inactive, is it possible to acquire the code as a stand-alone app? Wants my Garden back...sob...

I started a new garden this morning, and it has already gained a StiltMegan with a turtle-hat, so it's still working. You may need to prune your garden to get more stuff to grow - there's some sort of limit on the number of items a single garden can support. Check back through this thread for garden editor programs to make your task a little easier. There was one that listed all the items and nodes in a tree-view style, so you could find the deeply-nested but dead-end nodes and prune them out.

Is it editable? If it's not, it might have to do with the fact that xkcd recently started redirecting to https; for local storage, browsers consider http://xkcd.com and https://xkcd.com to be different sites, and Garden used to always redirect to http, so it's forgotten which gardens are yours.
