1756: "I'm With Her"

Postby PinkShinyRose » Mon Nov 07, 2016 5:09 pm UTC

Image
Title-text: We can do this.

So there's multiple cueballs and multiple girls that could be Megan?

EDIT: there's some hair length difference, so I guess we can keep the potential Megans apart (and identify Megan).

EDIT2: May I request we don't talk about global warming?

EDIT3: spelling mistake.

I logged in for the first time in many many years to say:

Thank you Randall, for remaining sane throughout this difficult and crazy election.

Everyone. Gentlemen. Romans, friends, countrymen, lend me thou ears! Go forth! Vote! And then be merry!

I don't see the joke here, and since I know bugger all about US politics, I'm not even sure where to look. Or if I should be looking for anything at all.

Has Randall directly endorsed a presidential candidate in a comic before? On the plus side there's only a day and a half left for this thread to devolve into a shitshow.

PinkShinyRose wrote:So there's multiple cueballs and multiple girls that could be Megan?

The one sitting in the H is closest, but I don't think any of them are actually Megan. The hair isn't right.

I wasn't going to vote for Clinton anyway, but now I additionally resent her for getting in the way of an actual new xkcd comic.

For those outside the US who have no idea what to make of this, (1) be very, very thankful, and (2) as far as I can tell, Randall is straight-up endorsing Hillary Clinton for President. As in, there's not really any joke here to "get".

(Well, there are various obvious jokes one could make about Trump being the best the Republican Party could come up with, but a joke is meant to induce laughter, and the only thing Trump makes me want to do is cry.)

Stopped by for a nice, apolitical comic... and yeah. Cue stupid political arguments and a bunch of people being ass hats. Cya in a few weeks.

Really? You could have used your power to promote a 3rd party (any third party!) making a push to actually change this broken 2-party system. And instead you give us a boring endorsement for the usual lesser of two evils? Sad, sad, sad.

Not American here, but I always thought anti-H posters were legit trolls. Surprised to find posts above with so much vitriol against her. Here, of all places, we can probably rule out that these are actually trolls.

Probably the same amount you got paid to whine about it.

People are allowed to have political views and people are allowed to advocate for their own political views.

On that note, thank you very much, Randall. I appreciate you not voting for the guy whose running mate advocated "curing" me and other LGBT people through conversion therapy.

I made an account specifically to comment.

I'm holding out some slim hope that this will turn out to be one of Randall's meta-jokes, but probably not.

With presidential candidates like the ones we have in the US right now, I wouldn't judge anybody for their vote. It's a grim business, when either a womanizing con man or a career criminal is going to be the next POTUS, and we all have to follow our consciences as best we can.

One of the reasons I've been such an xkcd fan for so long is that Randall is usually very good at avoiding this kind of childish crap, and not misusing the platform he has here.

But not any more, I guess. This is not even coherent political commentary. It's just virtue signalling in its shallowest, most self-centered form.

Consider yourself dumped, Randall.

EDIT:

Upon further consideration, I repent of that last statement. (Yes, I know, no one cares, but I wanted the statement to be on record.)

I think Hillary Clinton is a Very Bad Person, and I think Randall is wrong to endorse her on the front page without some sort of explanation, but that doesn't make him a Very Bad Person or lessen the worthiness of his work.

One of the biggest problems in American politics is using disagreement as an excuse to slander and isolate those on the other side of an issue, and I should have known better than to indulge in it myself.

I'm just disappointed that there's no comic today. I don't begrudge Randall having an opinion. It just would have been nice if there was some humor, a meaningful point or something to go along with it. It's just an empty endorsement ad.

Both candidates are just promising wild things whilst flirting with different voter groups. Both have a strong agenda to pretend to care about some people, for example you. Xkcd taking a side is kinda dirty. Ew.

Yeah. If he had integrity he'd be supporting the guy who bragged about sexually assaulting women, ran his business into the ground and had to declare bankruptcy six times, hires illegal immigrants then turns around and calls Mexican people "rapists", thinks we should build a wall even though it's been proven that our increased border security has only resulted in a rise in undocumented workers coming over, has a running mate who signed a bill in Indiana last year that would have allowed any business to discriminate against LGBT people for "religious" reasons, once said he would have sex with his own daughter if they weren't related... Do I need to go on?

Or is it just "lacking in integrity" to display one's political views at all? If that's the case, why is it only supporters of Democratic candidates and left-wing views who get tarred with this accusation?

(xkcd has non-comic updates, like, all the freaking time. At least this one is topical and not "list of words I want to play in Scrabble".)

So sad that smart people are backing her or Trump.

We need more and better realistic choices, non-strategic voting, and to get rid of the electoral college. None of that will happen this election, but voting for a third-party candidate will provide federal funding for their party next cycle and could help raise awareness that there are more choices and how much these changes are desperately needed.

The vast majority of US voters live in states that are solid red or solid blue. If you live in one of these states, your vote is a waste anyway, so vote for a third-party candidate and help them get to the 5% popular vote required for funding in 2020.

I just wish there were well-known third-party candidates besides Gary "The sun is going to engulf the Earth so nothing matters anyway" Johnson and Jill "Wifi is harming our children and student loan relief works the same way as bank bailouts (and I'm ignoring everyone who tells me otherwise)" Stein.

HIGNFYsaid something like "Will the USA end up with the worst president in history, or one even worse".

However, I will say that of all currently extant politicians globally, the only one I think could make a career in stand-up comedy is Obama.

Actually, if the electoral college was updated to use preference lists, this would fit nicely into our system to get instant-runoff voting inside the electoral college. This would give third party candidates a really fair shot without causing the strategic voting problems of actually voting for a third party.

What they're promising, and to whom, actually makes a difference. (The two main "third"-party candidates are doing the same thing, as are all politicians everywhere, if you insist on abstracting away all of the actual important things anyone is talking about.)

xkcdfan wrote:the guy who bragged about sexually assaulting women...then turns around and calls Mexican people "rapists"
I wonder if we've had it wrong all this time, and Trump was actually saying that as a compliment or as an explanation for why he hires them?

(xkcd has non-comic updates, like, all the freaking time. At least this one is topical and not "list of words I want to play in Scrabble".)
Yeah, people like to dress up their criticism in some kind of fake-objective garb, but what actually bothers them is the fact that Randall has expressed an opinion they disagree with, not that it is a non-comic post.

Wrong.
Are you ironically mocking Trump with an unelaborated denial of demonstrable facts, or are you unironically denying all of those things are true?
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

The mainstream media here in the Netherlands portray it as being essentially about comedian versus pop-podium with the election debate running on the side (with both candidates being so disliked that most people just vote for the candidate they hate least). If that's the case this would just be more of the same.

That's nice. Randall can endorse who he wants to endorse on any platform that he has. If you don't like it, you are free to voice your opinion like you have done. But, frankly, I am not sure why Randall's success means that he is not permitted to use it to get his message out.

It sounds like mockery, I think. One of Trump's favorite ways to "rebut" criticism is to just go "Wrong. Wrong. Wrong." in the face of verifiable facts.

It's really weird how these people are complaining about Randall exercising his right to free speech. But if their comments got deleted from this thread they'd probably start whining about BUT MUH FIRST AMENDMENT!!!

The jokes are in the comments!
