1797: "Stardew Valley"

Postby Eseell » Fri Feb 10, 2017 5:25 am UTC

alt-text: I have accidentally watered virtually every person and object in Pelican Town.

200 hours into Stardew Valley and few things annoy me more than wasting water on something because I forgot to equip something other than my watering can.

What amazes me is that I have barely done more than heard of this thing, but (with the small clarification of Eseell's own commentary) I understand eveything about the comic.

(Except whether Pelican Town is a separate thing to mistakenly imagine one could interchange, or a 'suburb' of the Valley. Going away to look that up now.)

((ETA: I guessed wrong. It would have been funnier if it had been (e.g.) Boom Beach residents that were apparently getting watered. But just goes to show how intuitive things are that the boringly-correct relationship came straight to mind to be put aside!))

Hmmm....

Instead of seeds, ground contained bobcat. Would not water again.

Otherwise, since the only video game I have any interest in is PinballArcade, I really don't care whether watering a farm in Stardew Valley leads to crops, invasions from Final Fantasy, or a collapse of underground MineCraft installations.

It's better than accidentally scything your crops because you forgot to select the watering can. GOD, I hate that.

This is the first comic in a while that I don't understand at all, or even have any idea what the reference is.

There's a computer game called Stardew Valley where you run a farm, plant and water crops, etc. You can have a cat/dog too, which you can pet each day. If you try petting your cat/dog with the watering can selected you can end up watering it by accident.

So based on Morfos' comment above, what happens if you try and pet your cat with a scythe equipped...

same mistake, but for some reason I prefer to hold the galaxy blade instead, which makes it even worse

Nothing happens with either of them to be honest.

Never having played the game (though I have heard of it and been tempted) I have do wonder why there aren't separate "use" and "interact" commands. Isn't that fairly common in this type of game?

Is it just me, or is Randall experimenting with a different brush with this comic? The lines on Cueball here seem much thicker than usual.

That's because this isn't Cueball, it's his in-game avatar, so of course it looks less realistic.

In my case, trying to milk pigs.

Though the most heart-wrenching for me is accidentally using a pickaxe on a crop. Restarted the day when I did it 3 times in a row.

So is this comic about Farmville now?

Not exactly. It's more open and simulationy than that and sounds possibly less treadmilly. It has romance options and dungeon crawls. It's indie and isn't a browser game.

Stardew Valley with Luke and Jane.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.
