1975: "Right Click"

Surprise Sunday comic!

Image

title text: "Right-click or long press (where supported) to save!"

I found the c-remover to be way funnier than it should be.

I'm off again, trying to get lost in the castle…

Sadly, this comic doesn't work at all on a tablet (ipad).

*goes to load up laptop and find out what it's about*

If you beat Advent.exe you get an option to save the image. I'm not sure of any way to link directly to the result, so I'm going to imgur this. This is the image you get when you save.

Spoiler:
Image

As for completing the game, here's how
Spoiler:
First, go to the castle, then the Well. Wish for "wisdom" to find the path through the maze of twisty passages later. Pull up the bucket to find a key
Use the key on the door, this gets you a clamp
Enter the castle. Use the Clamp on the C-remover to get a Lamp
Go back to the cave
Follow the instructions from the well, NENNNWSW
Click to take the egg, this unlocks the save button until you refresh
Note that taking too long results in being eaten by the grue, even if you backtrack. Refresh the page to start over.

The Sunday update makes sense.

It's the perfect comic for April Fools Day.

And for Easter; it's all easter eggs.

There is also another way to get the "Save Image" option, but I don't remember exactly what it was. The result is the same as beating ADVENT.EXE. Note that if you are eaten by a grue, you will no longer be able to play ADVENT.EXE until you refresh the page. There is also other stuff you can do, like crimes.

Some of the menu options that look like they are supposed to do things don't actually do anything. It's hard to say if they are working as intended, if they are supposed to do something but my browser just won't do it, or if Randall meant to put in more but forgot or decided not to.

The URL from which the image downloaded for me is https://xkcd.com/1975/v6xso1_right_click_save.png. Not sure if that is a temporary address or permanent though.

For some reason, the credits can be found via Delayed Blast Fireball.

Um... I got the save option but I'm not sure how. I haven't finished ADVENT.EXE.
I did manage to cast the teleport spell though. I haven't found any others yet. Nor have I succeeded in reaching Mornington Crescent.

Is 'Shipping Container visible if: darkWeb ON' a bug?

I should have thought of that. It was a pretty fun film.

What does this comment mean? Is Delayed Blast Fireball something I can type in somewhere? Is it a piece of software (like a browser addon or some shell script or whatever)? All I get on Google is that it's a level 7 evocation.

Also, how is it possible to advance in D&D at all? I can't get past the character creation stage.

Oh, I discovered what I did to unlock the save: I discovered the easter egg basket (which my brother tells me was at the finish of ADVENT.EXE) deep in Mornington Crescent.

Edit: not so deep:
Spoiler:

Well,
So much for getting down to actual work today. This is absurdly fun.
Just wondering if somewhere there's a sub-menu that makes you, you know, Wait For It.

Which can also involve waiting for it.

Edit: I got the "Save image" option but when I click it, nothing happens. Is that supposed to happen?
Edit2: Ok, so it doesn't work in Firefox. It does in Chrome.

I got the save through Utilities -> Park Drives and it gave me a similar looking set of options, but with Save at the top. It's only worked once, though, even after refreshes, closing Chrome and going back in, and trying a different browser. It must have been something I did before that, but I can't remember the other stuff I tried between refreshes.

Well, saving the image is easy. I just right-click and choose "Save image as...". Playing the game is a little annoying as I have to close the browser's right-click menu every time to get at the comic's right-click menu under it.

What kind of Tim Horton's doesn't sell donuts?

Also, if it's in Lower Canada, then it would also serve poutine.

I'm genuinely disappointed that no matter how far you follow the 'na's it doesn't ever end 'Hey Jude'.

Edit:

I'd delete this after realising I've been beaten to the punch, but I feel that it's important that the strength of feeling about this is known

The unixkcd console under System -> / -> home/ -> guest is sweet. Anyone figured out if cd command does anything?

Yes, you can do an

Code: Select all

guest@xkcd:/$ ls

welcome.txt
license.txt
blag/
blog/
fora/
forums/
store/
about/
guest@xkcd:/$

command andf for example:

Code: Select all

cd blog
cd fora

etc.. which opens the links to those pages in your browser window.

There's a link to the github code at the bottom, too, apparently this was from April fools day 2010, but I either missed it the first time or didn't remember!

Now with 63 unique locations!

Eternal Density's path is still best path.

I found a typo in the Who’s On First section. When it gets to the pitcher and Costello asks “You don’t want to tell me today?” it has Abbott respond “I’m tell you, man.”

Awesome! Another interactive one!

I haven’t even scratched the surface, but you get a link to a YouTube video if you cast enhance ability as a Druid... I haven’t tried most of the spells.

LOTS of links go to youtube videos. More than a few link to some channel that creates deliberately ugly characters in video games.

I posted this before I’d played around with it and seen how many YouTube videos there are. It’s a really great comic.

I got Save to appear by going through Mornington Crescent, but sadly the option didn't actually do anything in Firefox when I tried to click it. Oh well. (Maybe it's because I also found it through ADVENT.EXE first? I didn't even realize the Save option was there until I checked explainxkcd.com.)

It's nice that the menu options persist if you start over with a fresh right-click.

I like the Homestar Runner reference in the caves. I never did finish Thy Dungeonman 2. On that note, did you know there's another new SBemail?

Or you could Google "London Underground Map". (Are you one of today's lucky ten thousand people who will be seeing it for the first time?) The game encompasses the stations in Zone 1.

Disappointed that they added "Hey Now" to the Na reference but left out "Hey Now > Hey Now, Na Na Na Now > Hey Now > Hey Now, Na Na Na > Frank's 2000 Inch TV".

It seems to be somewhat confused about whether I'm running Windows or Unix. I wonder if it would be differently confused if I were running Windows (or Mac) instead of Linux? (In other words, is there any OS-sniffing code involved?)
