Title text: " "Ok, team. We have a little under 10,000 years before closest approach to figure out how to destroy Barnard's Star." "Why, does it pose a threat to the Solar System?" "No. It's just an asshole.""

I can't believe it. explainxkcd.com got this posted before anyone posted here.

I reckon Barnard's Star is thinking "I wish they'd build a bypass".

Re: Title text
So, a slightly more aggressive variant of Project Daedalus Mk2?

What I'm wondering is; who's next after this?
Is Lalande 21185 sketchy enough to need action, or should be just go after Ross 248 since it will be getting closest?

Okay, it's a little disturbing how similarly Randall's and my mind work. I was just reading about Barnard's star on Wikipedia a few days ago, appropos of nothing in particular, and thought for a moment on reading this comic that Randall must have my phone bugged. Then I remembered that the thing that got me reading about Barnard's star was that I had been reading the latest What If which had linked to a Wikipedia article about helium-3, which in turn linked to something about inertial confinement fusion as a proposed means of interstellar travel, which in turn linked to a proposed project from the 1970s about using an ICF drive to send a mission to Barnard's star. Now I don't for sure that Randall went on exactly the same wiki walk that I did, but it would certainly make sense.

Why are Randal's celestial objects always screaming? Does it hurt to be a light in the galaxy, or to orbit Jupiter?

I think they're screaming because they're moving so fast.

I figured it was a sort of weird Doppler thing, plus screaming to get my attention.
on a related note, maybe Wobler should have written his game to travel to Barnard's Star instead of Alpha Centauri.http://forums.xkcd.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=125344&sid=94f66f3f21941d0809bfcc2bb4a2b8b2#p4401061

Maybe we are in a bad part of the galaxy. Hold onto your wallets!

Nah - unless it says "I'm a simple country star" in which case a death grip on the wallet is required.

Barnard's Star may be a troll, but it only has time to say "I'm a giraffe."

Actually, according to our best statistics, 100% of all crime happens in the Sol system.

Also, while I can't rob Barnard's star, and I don't know of anything there to steal, I totally would rob it blind.

They scream because no one can hear them.
