2075: "Update Your Address"

Title text: This is my four-digit PIN. It was passed down to me by my father, and someday I will pass it on to you. Unless we figure out how to update it, but that sounds complicated.

There's a much simpler solution to all this: never move.

That still doesn't help if the empire you live under is dissolved.

Then you secede from whatever the successor state is and declare yourself the sole surviving remnant of the old regime.

It worked for Taiwan. Kind of.

Not quite a PIN, but I actually use the same 4 digit code for combination locks that my parents used.

There are stories of people who were born in Hungary, got married in the Austro-Hungarian empire, had some children in Czechoslovakia and others in Ukraine, and died in the USSR... all without ever moving out of the village they were born in. (It's one of those "it ought to be funny, except it really isn't" things.)

I...ummm...use my grandfather's PIN for one of my cards.

I remember a code that someone I know uses (for several things, that I need to know the details for) because it's a transform (not simple, but not overly complicated) of the combination bike-lock I used in the '80s. That isn't what they think of it/thought it up as, though. To them it's two house numbers from their past. But I'd never remember that.

For my own bank cards, I tend to take the PIN that it arrives with (presumed both unpredictable/unguessable and secure, except for anyone who has tapped into the issuing system) and simply change it to the reverse (which the person with access to the issuing system would have to deal with, assuming they don't just have carte blanche in other ways I could never prevent). Then I justify/create a mnemonic to it.

The "That's my childhood home. How is that even in your system?" thing totally happened to me the other day. The address in question was twenty years obsolete, and the business in question was one that I definitely didn't start doing business with until years after I began living on my own.

It was a medical-related thing, so my theory is that they must have digitized some old records from my medical history and extracted the address from those. Though I can't quite think how they would have gotten medical records that old, either. It's very puzzling.

Who else immediately recognized Ash Tree Lane?

Now I'm thinking the other two addresses surely have some sort of meaning, but they escape me. And explainxkcd.com is down.

EDIT: Up again, but they don't know either. Hmm.

The town I lived in for pretty much all of the 1960s no longer exists, except as an "historic district" within the third largest city in Los Angeles County. The hospital where I had my first job (unpaid) is no more, and in fact the building itself hasn't existed for over a decade. The first company I worked for for pay now has a completely different name. And just this week I had to prove my identity by trying to remember the make and model of the car that I owned in December of 1991.

And not a week goes by that someone doesn't give me a hard time for "living in the past".

Or simpler, if the street you live in gets renamed. Happened to an address where I used to live as a student. It was a longish street, crossed by a big through road, but with a common name on both sides. Some years after I moved they renamed and re-numbered the part north of that through road, so my former address now has a different street name and house number.

Also whole cities got renamed in the 90s in East Germany and some other ex-socialist countries. Karl-Marx-Stadt/Chemnitz and Leningrad/St. Petersburg are probably the most prominent examples. The German postal code system also got completely reworked after the reunion. You see, not moving is absolutely not a reason why your address should remain the same.
It's cooler up here.

Well this is probably pretty rare, but as an example of not moving and still having your address change ...

We get our mail through a rented post office box in a small, privately-owned USPS licensed establishment that had been renting space in a small strip small. It was either rent a box or go with a non-secure rural mail box on a post half a mile away. So all was cool for many years. Then the post office lost its lease and was forced to move across the street.

We retained our box number (they literally moved the entire wall of boxes) but our street address changed from 48412 to 47801. Everything else in the address stayed the same. That all went down over a year ago. I'm still discovering accounts I don't use often where the address needs to be updated. Pain in the ass but whadaya gonna do?

Updating email addresses can be even more of a pain, if the only way to verify your identity for account changes is to have a message sent to your email. Oh, you used the address your ISP provided for you, and then changed ISPs? Sucks to be you; you're now locked out of the system forever.

True story:

A short time after I bought my condo, a relative came to visit. I gave her my spare key. When she was leaving, she couldn't find the key (turns out it was in her pants pocket).

After she found it, she mailed it back to me...to an address from which I moved away at least three years prior.

I went to that old apartment ready to write a note to leave on the mailbox asking whoever lived there now to call me. However, thanks to the laziness of the post office, the package with the key was laying on the floor underneath the mailboxes (and thanks to people holding the door open for someone else walking up, I was able to get into the area with the mailboxes in the first place without a current key to the building).

So, everything that isn't supposed to happen conspired to enable me to get the item that was mine anyway.

And now you know why I don't give out keys to anyone anymore.

Wait, so after visiting you at your new place, she sent you mail at your old address?

That strikes me as being pretty astoundingly absent-minded.

Do you want to know the fuss I had to go through to get the photocard driving licence back that was sent to an address I wasn't resident at yet? It was sent as a registered mail that circumstances then forced me to then collect using a photoID. It had only been lost in the first place because I had taken it to prove my identity, it being my current sole photoID, and though they had been kind enough to send it back to me they ended up 'helpfully' using the secure method of postage that led to that particular stalemate.

"Empire" nothing, even in democracies entire provinces have become economically obsolete too quickly to mitigate. Relocation of some from there can enable money to be sent back home, slowing the descent into poverty, and if it happens anyway relocation of the remaining people from there can allow them to escape said poverty and be spread out amongst more prosperous provinces.

It sucks that geography is so answerable to the almighty dollar, but that's life.

The “empire being dissolved” bit isn’t about people having to physically move, but about deleting the shape on the map drawn around the place they still live.

The answer to "the address of my home changed" is to send a GPS device to the previous address, and move to wherever it's delivered to.

Someone once left a GPS receiver atop the trunk of my car at my home here in Phoenix. I decided to attempt to find the owner, and after asking a few neighbors was left with only one brilliant plan: I charged it up, turned it on, and told it to plot a driving route to "home".

It took several minutes before showing me the best way to get to some place in Florida.
