0351: "Trolling"

Postby Alphaniner » Fri Nov 30, 2007 5:05 am UTC

Alt text: and I was really impressed with how they managed to shock the goatse guy

Once again, xkcd reads my mind. Literally 5 minutes ago, we were discussing various shock sites on an IRC, and goatse invariably wound up as the topic of discussion.

I really think the alt-text made this one. again.

It's a bit hard to judge the comedy of this on its own merits, because I can't really think about Rickrolling without laughing. So I laughed audibly, but that doesn't mean very much when it comes to the topic of never going to give things up.

Hah, brilliant. Since I have been rickrolled, this made me smile.

The alt text just made me shudder.

It's sort of funny how this is the ONE TIME that nobody has bothered to do any speed-posting, considering the content. I myself waited five minutes to create one and when no update came I posted.

And got beat.

Meh.

The only thing better than Rick Rolling is that before I knew any better I thought the lyrics were going to "and then I'm gonna _____" instead of "never gonna give _____", and I thought gee this is the most accurate love song ever.

That would be so awesome. Because he's really enthusiastic about the extent to which he's going to give you up, so I can imagine that interpretation being especially hilarious/bittersweet if Rick Astley just broke your heart.

Food for thought: Rick Astley can pretty much Rick Roll you any time, anywhere. He probably carries around a microphone so he can do it at a moment's notice.

I've never been rickrolled, I only learned what rickrolling was three days ago, and I didn't know who Rick Astley was, so this comic failed to garnish any laughter. I don't think it's because it's because I'm not in tune with Internet subculture; I think it's because I don't hang out with jerks that link to goatse and try to rickroll.

Except for that time someone linked me to a goatse wedding cake.

I think the reason for this may be that xkcd.com still leads to Network. I randomly clicked on this forum and saw this topic, felt like an idiot, went back to check main page, was confused, and then it dawned on me.

I had to wikipedia Rick Astley in order for this one to make sense. (Shows how little I know of internet culture.) But now that I have, the comic is amusing.

I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier.

The weirdest part about this is that I was just Rick Rolled not too long ago REALLY HARD.

Hehe. I just envisioned "Rickroller's Annonymous"

"Hey, my name's Alphaniner"
"Hi Alphaniner!"
"Well, I started Rickrolling about 7 months ago, casually, y'know, with my friends? But then it became more and more frequent. I had a problem. Every single link would redirect to Never Gonna Give You Up. But I haven't Rickrolled anybody in 3 weeks!"

Does that even count as Rick Rolling? If you just post the link and I click on it? I mean, if I know I'm getting Rick Rolled, is it still Rick Rolling? That is what I want to know!

Am I the only one that looks at the actual URL of "disguised" links?

I guess it would be kind of difficult to tell what YouTube video it is, unless you memorize the ID of the Rick Astley video.

I'll admit that I had never heard of rickrolling before. I'm not sure that I should be proud that I made a pretty accurate assumption about it based on the comic though. I also had to watch the movie on youtube.

WRT the comic, IMO: Swiiiing... and a miss.

I never really thought the whole "Rick Roll" thing was funny. (I realize I am likely in the minority on this board on this point.)

Lol, I actually thought of that right after I posted, hence the edit. Now it's actually Powerthirst. Of course, now that I've said that, I might change it to another rickroll. But now that I've said *that*, I might not. And so on and so forth. Inconceivable, I know.

Once of the most beautiful rickrolls I've seen was on /r/, and someone was asking for the rickroll video (presumably so they could rickroll others with it) and someone posted this.
It's a rickroll video, which has been rickrolled. 11 seconds it, another copy of rickroll starts. Beautiful.

(I still need to implement some kind of rickroll detection code for one of my sites, it's kinda annoying)

That's really awesome. Personally when I know someone is expecting to be Rick Rolled, I like to Rick Ross them instead.

Though I don't know if I've ever successfully Rick Rossed anyone.
