Title text: Sometimes an impulsive 2:00 AM cross-country trip is the only solution.

Haven't we all been there before?

EDIT: Forgot about the link. Sorry, fixed now.

So I guess the guy wants to send this even though he can't? Otherwise I'm kinda confused.

Cross country trips are always so difficult though. And for those of us that don't live in the states that are three feet apart, it's harder then it sounds.

SO TRUE.

I think this is the comic that has hit closest to home for me in a long while.

Me and my girlfriend are in a semi-long distance relationship with college and all, so we use phone and IM as the primary form of communication. We also make habits of reading XKCD together at night, because we both consider ourselves delightfully nerdy. We really bonded over this :-)

This is also far too relevant to me, although it will be much more so next school year.

I am neither in a long-distance relationship (or any for that matter) or a big fan of IM, so I didn't find this comic up to the usual XKCD quality. That and the title-text was a bit too similar to other comics.

Actually I find this to come a lot closer to the earliest romantic XKCDs. If something like Light or even Angular Momentumshowed up now, they would be far from the "usual XKCD quality" nowadays, but I don't think any of us weren't immensely moved the first time we saw them.

the alt text made my heart hurt, because when i was in a long distance relationship and wanted to visit cross country, he said it was illogical and we could wait until christmas. </3

That is because you have nobody to IM or nobody to be in a relationship with.

Don't bother critiquing somebody's work where you have no authoritative grounds.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

As far as I've seen there hasn't been a comic where people haven't said that he has been reading there mind.

I'm not in a relationship right now but I know this feeling well. . .

Sigh.

The most frustrating thing about long distance relationships is when you love someone enough that breaking up isn't even an option, so you have to drag yourself through it whether you like it or not.

Well, the comics like angular momentum and light have a wider reach and I appreciated them because of their lack of specificity. Here if you don't have such experience it's harder to really appreciate it, sort of like how all the non-programmers don't get the humor in a lot of programming-related jokes. (I mean, I couldn't think of a virtual hug as anything close to a virtual substitute for a real one.)

Cross country? Pfft. There have been times where I was up at 2:00a and really needed to start globetrotting right fucking now, entry visas (and my possibly expired passport, need to check that) be damned.

Granted, none of these were for LDRs. They were simply friends who were in need, who just happened to be on the other side of the world. Okay, so there was that one LDR, but it wasn't anything serious.

But I must echo the sentiment of "Wish You Were Here".
While I clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning,
And my heart was filled with mournng, mourning for my dear amour.
"'Tis not possible!" I uttered, "Give me back my free hardcore!"

i did pennsylvania and california for 2 years, and he was in France for 3 months too...
it didn't work out, but it definitely made me much more patient and understanding. Sometimes I get so frustrated at my friends who are in happy, same-city relationships and take each other for granted. If they had to be apart for months at a time, they wouldn't spend so much of their time angry at each other for small misunderstandings.

Although, there are few things as heartbreakingly precious as those short visits when both of you know not to waste a single second.
