0363: "Reset"

Postby Kaelri » Fri Dec 28, 2007 5:02 am UTC

Alt text: "Clearance for this sign: 11 feet."

Edit: Ah, yes. Forgot about the "commentary" requirement. My fault.

I'm not sure whether the implication is that the numbers advance automatically, and are manually reset, or if they're advanced manually, which would be... an interesting experiment, to say the least.

I remember when I used to work my first crappy retail job, they had one of those "it's been x days of safety!" Then someone opened a box and did the "down the street" method on their arm, by accident I am told.

The next day the sign was removed.

Judging by the hooks above the numbers, I'd say someone manually does it. If there were a sign like this in my office, I'd be the guy that changes it back after someone resets it.

I really don't get that title text... anyone care to explain it? Or am I just being stupid in my tired drunken state?

"Clearance 11 feet" usually means that there's 11 feet of clearance between the ground and some ceiling/overpass/beam/whatever. Not the clearance between the ground and the sign itself.

Once while I was taking a tour of a plant that I applied to I watched a worker change the sign from 2 days to 0 days. I didn't take the job.

it could have an LED display. Everything should have one... EVERYTHING!

Where might I get such a sign? I have GOT to get one for my workplace. I know my coworkers would love it.

I'm a bit confused. Reset as in set back to zero?

I think a more clever sign would be "It has been 38 days since someone changed the amount of days on this sign." Because then it would just be mind blowing.

The two comics 38 days ago were Diet Coke + Mentos and Brick Archway :)

good Lord, it's been awhile.

anyways, was that supposed to be funny in any classically humourous way, or merely an amusing mental puzzle?

as for the "38 days since someone changed the amount of days"...
yes. mind blowing. like when your mind gets blown or something.

If we had an automatic advancing sign like this at our school... Not only would the count be at zero all the time, but most of the numbers would be ripped off and stamped on the unpopular peoples' lockers. It's something odd about those ignorant jerks, they surely know cameras are there.

Anyone else notice the little gray square in the comic. Its on the floor, near the left. Just doesn't seem to match the style of xkcd, to have random spots. Maybe it is intentional?

Hahaha. This comic really made me laugh. I think people are looking way too far into it...it's a joke like that "This Sign Has Sharp Edges" picture. The only purpose of the sign is to tell you that the sign is there. Which is funny...

Same with the alt-text. It reminds me of parking ramps. I've always wondered about that. They have those little things that hang down. I mean, I'd get it if they hung down like maybe a few inches from the top so idiots didn't try to see if they could fit really close and then get stuck, but those signs hang down like two feet or more from the top of the ramp. I mean, really, that's just inefficient.

No it wouldn't. Think about it. That sign could never tell the truth 100% of the time.

Spoiler:
What would happen 24 hours and 1 minute after someone changed the sign to "0"? They'd have to change it to "1". But that doesn't make any sense, would it?

I bet Douglas Hofstadter has that sign in his office

Wait, wait, wait. So what happens when it's only been a few hours since a reset? Or what if the sign hasn't been reset for more than 99 days? That 'days' space needs to be changeable as well. *Nods*

I have to make one of them for my school. Would be uber-awesome.

Only problem: How? It might be easy to build one using something like C, but in hardware?
