Cool. Very nice change in tone (it's been a while since we've had a serious one).

Love it.

(So worth staying online a few more minutes to "click--refresh--wait-for-an-updated-comic")

Makes me wish I had a sailboat... and a dude working on a computer to think about.

I found the double thought bubble very effective, along with the way it ends with a wide shot to show there is no further thought bubble outside the final frame. The vertical format works well. It's refreshing to see a completely non-funny comic, and with it the return of the more detailed world that Randall draws whenever people are "adventuring" instead of experiencing the mundaneness of ordinary life.

I agree. I really like the changes in detail level.

I love the pencil sky, although sailor-girl looks too pure a black in contrast.

It reminds me of my girlfriend, who is also a sailor-lass. I am currently slaving away in front of the computer, and I know she's wishing I had time to do things like that with her as much as I am. *sigh* When it's warm again in Connecticut, we'll go sailing.

I don't think its recursive, I don't think computer guy is real. I see it as starting to make you think of dreaming about being a pirate, but then it turns out that its about a pirate dreaming about people wanting to be them.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but thats what sprang to mind for me.

I particularly like the juxtaposition of the detailed drawing of the boat against the plain line drawing of the computer lab and vice versa in panels 4-7. Also, I really like being able to use "juxtaposition" in a sentence. I rarely get the opportunity.

I think he's trying to say that everyone wants to be wanted by someone, even if you're a girl on a sailboat, having adventures.

Do you guys think she's thinking of anyone in particular, or just a generic guy working at a computer?

Great, just great. Im pretty sure the alt text means that the comic itself is someone's imagination, probably the computer dude's.

I was literally left staring at this one in wonder for a few seconds. Just amazing.

Also like it, got the feeling that the last panel was just before we'd see the next set of thought bubbles, but it works just as well the lass far off on the sea dreaming of those on land.

I think the tooltip suggests that Man-at-computer is thinking about not just a wonderful Sailor-Girl, but a wonderful Sailor-Girl who's thinking of him. The comic itself is only a comic.

Although Randy doesn't limit its meaning to that; I just see it that way.

I totally agree with the comments on the vertical format and seriousness (is that a word?) of the topic, but that wasn't the way I interpreted it the first time I read it (although the more I look at it, the more it feels like it could be interpreted either way). The first time I read it, the end felt to me like the next pane (if there were one) would be another thought bubble (sort of like the thoughts getting more specific as you go deeper in the thought bubbles and less specific, causing the thought bubbles to be farther from the subject, as you go farther out in levels).
I'm not sure if that made any sense. Let me try a different approach in case it didn't:
... a girl at sea thinking about a guy on land thinking about a girl in a sailboat thinking about a guy in a room thinking about a specific girl in a sailboat thinking about a specific guy in a room ...

Edit - It occurs I should mention how I understood your interpretation. I think you were implying you felt it zoomed out to show there weren't any more bubbles, right? (I think that's definitely a valid interpretation, but I'm not sure if my first impression, or yours is what Randal intended.) Anyone else have a different opinion?

Must you objectify women like so?? And men too??

Besides your code would cause the stack to overflow...

Also i just figured it meant that every pirate girl wishes for a nerdy computer guy to dream of her. Can any pirate girls confirm?

I found it very touching. People dreaming of other people and whatnot, wishing they could be someone else (because who doesn't at some point in their lives?).

One of my favorites in a long long while--it certainly is nice to see a more serious, thoughtful comic once in a while--and I love the art style (and paraphrasing someone else here, the opportunity to use the phrase 'incongruous juxtaposition').

It touched a chord.

... Now I want to go sailing. Damn not being off work till 5.30. Or particularly close to the sea.

Fantastic comic. I really like the wistful ones. They make a lovely counterpart to the quick jokes, and technical fun.

This old lady keeps showing up all over the place. Have we officially named her Bun Lady, now?

I guess three times isn't actually a lot, but she's very distinctive. And apparently, tech-savvy.

In any case, the comic makes me smile. Sometimes you need a bit of sentimentality in place of your regular humor.

(That's "struck a chord")

I really like this one, the double thought bubble being another thing that's outside what you'd expect.

To everyone arguing (discussing?) what it is written as, take into consideration the title. "To Be Wanted". It's a girl daydreaming (or thinking) about a guy thinking about her. She is thinking about a person who is thinking about her (wanting someone to want her). My second thought was that it could be her thinking about a person who at that point is thinking about her, but unless there's psychic communication involved, I wouldn't be so sure about that. It's touching, and I'm sure there's a few people on the fora here that have felt the same way at some point(s).

On another note, the lady from Interesting Life either moved her desk, changed jobs, or has a twin.

I think it's deep stuff. I sometimes find myself thinking in this manner, where I wonder if the person I'm thinking about is thinking about me, or vice versa. Also, I like the touch of the sailing traveler. It gives it a sense of adventure.

when i first saw it i thought that the zoomed out last panel was to show her turning around, or to show that she was moving forward... as if to suggest she was heading to her beloved computer guy. alt-text... he hopes the girls he's dreaming of is not only dreaming of him too, but is heading to be with him.

i like that as an idea, but it could be completely wrong!

I think I love this one. The shading, the seriousness...everything. It's so sad and sweet at the same time. I almost think it should become one of the thumbnails at the bottom.

Does anyone think that Sailor Girl could actually be Adventure Girl, who is talking Computer Geek01 in http://www.xkcd.com/308/. That would mean that Computer Geek01 could be the one she's thinking of thinking of her (that looks really odd, no matter how many times I say it out loud).
