0380: "Emoticon"

Alt text: U+FDD0 is actually Unicode for the eye of the basilisk, though for safety reasons no font properly renders it.

the following I found mandatory:

Code: Select all

>>> print u"\U+FDD0"
UnicodeDecodeError: 'unicodeescape' codec can't decode bytes in position 0-6: end of string in escape sequence

:P

EDIT: linkified

It took me about 2 minutes before I completly got the joke. I then proceeded to laugh loudly.

I'm still not sure if I get all of the joke, but I laughed very loudly none the less.

Edit: Now I finally got it. THAT WAS BRILLIANT!

Hum... I know this sounds geeky, but basilik-eyes emoticon sounds like a weird modern RPG spell of petrification.

A little like: "I prepared explosive rune this morning", but in a chatroom everybody that reads it is petrified... MWAHAHAHA

This comic is totally unrealistic. Basilisks are supposed to have legs.

(At least all the ones in the HOMM games do...)

It's kind of sad, if you think about it, the basilisk only wants a friend, but he can't keep any, because, darnit, they keep dying!

Haha, great comic.

Maybe the basilisk should've used that sunglasses face emoticon.

So... you use a completely wrong syntax to enter the code into python, it doesn't work, and you're surprised?

U+FDD0 is the standard way of referring to that character in text, \uFDD0 is the way to refer to it in python.

For reference: the range U+FDD0 through U+FDEF is a non-character section in the Arabic Presentation Forms-A range... though maybe those characters are just censored for our safety? Which raises the question... what are the other 31 characters in that range? Medusa's snakes? The HD-DVD AACS keys?

Also: I too didn't get the joke until I read the alt text and saw "basilisk". After that I thought it was hilarious.

Huh. I forgot basilisks can turn people to stone. I also never realized the guy died. I had no idea what was going on. It's been so long at this point though that I never got to laugh... :(

At first I thought I didn't get the joke.
Then I checked this thread and realized that I did get the joke.

It just wasn't that funny.

That smilie face in the comic is hella creepy.

Plus it's deadly to look at and we all just saw it...

Someone call poison control!

At first I was like ehhh. But the more I thought about it the more I laughed. Plus the Basilisk likes kinda cute.

Those characters are/were used for the language of The Nameless City. (You might find an inscription near Irem. But you really don't want to read it.)

This comic also reminds of a an SF story I saw a long time back. Something about how graphics were found that would kill you when looked at. Apparently they started to be made into stencils, and the web reverted to text-only.

That was brilliant! I actually laughed out loud.

I got it before I read the alt-text, and the fact that the alt-text explained the joke kind of makes me sad. But it was still bloody fantastic. I think the look on the basilisk's face is what does it.

Anyone ever seen a real basilisk? They're small, and they can run on water. I think one was featured once in an SUV commercial where the SUV drove on the water next to it.

Wait, I think there may be a problem here: wouldn't the basilisk see his smilie on his own screen as well? Are basilisks immune to their own smilies?

For some reason, the first thing I thought of after seeing panel 3 was that is a capital N in the Wingdings font; it's also U+2620.

Fortunately, he didn't see the gaze directly, so he'll only be Petrified. Send him to the hospital wing immediately!

Congratulations! You've won a brand new thread! This one, to be precise! ;)

It took me a bit to get it, but I chuckled nicely afterwards. I love the basilisk in the last panel-- it really makes the comic.

Didn't get it at first and went wtf? for a couple of minutes. Then I noticed that the guys eyes are X'es, that clearly indicates death or unconciousness.

The unicode character charts have this to say about the FDD0-FDEF range:
These codes are intended for process-internal uses, but are not permitted for interchange

Perhaps it is for the best that they are not permitted for interchange...

Alllll right ....

so I know basilisks have a gaze attack, but ... is that already the whole joke? Can't be, then the alt text would be useless. So can someone explain to me the meaning of A/S/L and U+FDD0? (and what other references I probably didn't get)?

Thank you,

Zak

P.S.: Yes, he definitely shold have used a mirror.

If you are reading this, you probably doesn't have a font that renders the eye of the basilisk correctly (or are immortal or immune or something)

Well a/s/l is an abbreviation in internet slang, according to wikipedia.

All I know is, that it's short for age/sex/location, and it's how fat old guys get in touch with someone. Typical usage follows:

CommonNewb: Hi! Can someone boost me through nightmare?
ImAnOldGuy: hi CommonNewb! a/s/l?
CommonNewb: Well, I'm a 16 year old guy from Germany
ImAnOldGuy: nvm d00d

Edit: Oh year, and I love the dramatic zoom on the smiley in the third picture :D
Apart from that, the idea that the basilisks deadly gaze should be transportable via a computer is really funny.
However, this does raise a question: can smileys or fonts be deadly? Should we fear a new messenger virus with a smiley resembling a ring going around?

Doesn't anybody else think this comic is poignant? All the basilisk wants is a friend...

On the other hand, the basilisk could maliciously be attacking people with smilies, but I prefer the "Grendel Grendel Grendel" approach.
That's my hat! She took my hat!
