I completely agree. In fact, there are some people I know who sustain themselves from correcting people both in Internet fora as well as Wikipedia. Its like a obsessive-compulsive need to prove people wrong.

I've done that too much. Ends up with me feeling like crap the next day.

*Whew* I don't know about you guys, but I frantically hit Refresh for five minutes until the comic came up. Close call!

This comic is so brilliant because it is so, so true.

"No, you listen. They have already proved that the universe started at a point in space and time, just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it's not true." That one took a few hours to resolve. And by resolve, I mean be argued to death until neither of us could stand it anymore, even though neither of us had budged an inch.

XKCD wins, as usual.

Do you think we are being made fun of for arguing so fervently in the discussion thread of the last comic?

Or maybe about the Francis Drake thing?

This is indicative of a really overwhelming helplessness. I feel the nihilism/absurdism closing in and begin to wish I wasn't a constructive epistemologist and that there was something neat for me to hang onto. I think I'll go and read about turning counter-clockwise again. Ugh, writing about truth makes me so introspective, pretentious and emo. I need to break the habit.

Man, I was just doing that very thing... I am sure you are all familiar with the debates over whether or not 0.999... = 1. Of course it is, but so many refuse to believe it.

Maybe I should just go to bed.

Y'know, Randall doesn't actually read the forums anymore.

Brilliant, this comic is the reason I can't go on internet forums anymore. I have to actively remind myself not to read replies to what I post - or, failing that, not to respond.

Every day I remind myself that the internet is inhabited by robots (or soulless humans, who are dead inside and thus robot freaks) in order to stop myself from inventing a machine that would, in fact, allow me to throttle people over the internet. Oh, the terrible disorders I have that the internet brings out in me...

Why? He's sitting on a chair. Does it bother you when real people sit on chairs without their legs reaching the ground?

"But there are people on Yahoo! Answers who need calculus help! How can I just leave them?"

Normally expressed as:

"OK, I'll be there soon"
followed by crawling into bed an hour and a half later.

It reminded me of the discussion of the last comic too. But Randall is informed by some of the mods right? Maybe someone told him.

Substitute world for internet, and this comic succinctly explains a lot of the conversations I have with people.

[05:56] <RobinS> xkcd, a number of people on the fora seem to think your latest comic was inspired by the discussion thread of the previous comic.
[05:57] <RobinS> true to the comic, I would like to prove them wrong.
[05:57] <xkcd> RobinS: The comics are basically never based on the response to previous comics.
[05:57] <RobinS> xkcd: thanks.
[05:57] <xkcd> RobinS: I don't read much of the instant response.
[05:58] <xkcd> RobinS: I had a few people say "oh, journal 2 was just written because of the response to journal 1"
[05:58] <xkcd> RobinS: and I was like "... what response?"
[05:58] <RobinS> I can imagine.
[05:58] <xkcd> RobinS: for the record, today's comic is because I've been totally doing that nonstop lately, I don't know why :)

Oh God. This week totally me. Including the girlfriend and the "coming to bed soon honey?".

Seriously though, what if the topics aren't "Can you make a good sword out of titanium", or "Who would win: Yoda or Superman?"

What if the topics is something like a re-affirmation of the blood libel?
Or specifically last week "Coke is an effective spermicide". You can't let people go around thinking Coke is an effective contraceptive method, surely?!

Edited to add: Coke is not an effective contraceptive.

He's on the IRC channel with the nick XKCD (duh there). irc.foonetic.net on #xkcd
Failing that you could........ do something else? I dunno.

In response to the comic, I love this. I try not to do this. I've been kicked off a website's staff because one of the higher-up Admins got pissed about something I said. Or at tleast that's how it looked.

On that note... who's got anything that can prove effective ownership of the internet (The connections and all), what it takes to get a copyright on something, and relative unhealthiness (sp?) of BBQ smoke in comparison to cigarette smoke? I know I'm right but I have no proof! :x
(PM me with that.)

Yoda v. Superman is a hard one. I'm rooting for Yoda but I'm not sure he would win.
