Degaussing the matrix would make for a spectacular light show.

But since dead pixels don't happen on CRTs, the matrix is LCD. So degaussing would not exist?

dead pixel = metaphor?

Dead Star
Dead Moon
Dead Sun
Death Star?

Interesting spin on the matrix, cute too :)

I've never joked about what resolution is life, but if you were to ask that same question about the universe, wouldn't the obvious answer be "the Planck length"? (Not that the universe is discrete, although if you really want to discuss that question, take it here.)

I think he was talking about stars that you see in the morning in the sky. They look like dead pixels.

You're right. I was looking at the previous version of the matrix.

So, I can tell there are orange circles and green circles, and the orange ones spell out words, but I couldn't make the words out clearly until I went into photoshop.

Am I slightly colorblind? Do the words pop out for anybody?

Possibly, but it's just as likely that your screen doesn't show those colours with as much contrast as mine. If you've got a cheap monitor, or a cheap video card, or haven't spent ages obsessively twerking the settings, then it's likely your screen doesn't quite match the standard (if there even is a standard).

Which is why online colourblind tests aren't going to work... the mapping between R/G/B values and actual colours isn't strict enough.

They pop out for me, but the differing sizes of the circles delays me "spelling out" the words in my head for a moment or two. Makes me actually have to stop and think for once.

If you see dead pixels in the sky, you might want to try rinsing out your contact lenses first.

This one made me so freaked out... probably 'cause me and my friends are the kind of people who joke about life being too low-res, and have actually made those sorts of jokes. But seriously, if I saw dead pixels in the sky, I think I'd just start crying.

...I mean, come on! As freaky as the notion that we are all trapped inside a gigantic virtual reality *is*, it's even freakier to think that we're all trapped inside a gigantic *malfunctioning* virtual reality! D: D:

We've had our eye on you for some time, Mr. Anderson. It seems you've been living... two lives. In one, you are a geek for a respectable occupation. The other life... is lived in computers, where you go by the n00b alias "Figs", and in which you've lost at every intarwebs on the books.

Now, we're willing to... wipe the slate clean -- give you a new start. But you have to cooperate with us, watch "The Matrix".

I believe the technical term for this is "macular degeneration."

There's no end to the technology jokes you can make about The Matrix. For example:

Hah, don't worry about it. For one, I haven't been taking a vow of silence so that I can get be a fighter pilot, and for another, if you were to point at a specific dot and say "Is this orange or green?" I would be able to tell you exactly which one it was. The edges of the letters are just a little hard to determine without focusing specifically and playing connect the dots.

Oh god, this one is brilliant in its exacerbation of my neurosis. I looked at the second panel, twitched, and had to force my hand to *not* poke at the fake dead pixels long enough to close the page. Brilliant and horrible.

I actually did poke the fake dead pixels... then realised I have a CRT, and I have no idea why I thought it'd do anything.

What's worse is that I didn't do it until I'd read the rollover text and saw it mentioned there... I hadn't heard of that trick before, so I tried it to see if it worked. It didn't.

I saw four dead pixels. The dead pixel on my work computer was inside the panel, just a bit upwards to the right.

No, you have an interesting colour profile on your monitor. The words were difficult for me as well, although I didn't need to photoshop it. My Macbook Pro screen tends to show colours in quite a different way to sRGB.

I swear the other day I saw jagged edges. Like how on low-res stuff like N64 games you can see the pixels at the edge of a polygon. And these were fucking big too, must have been like 1 square inch per pixel! I wonder WTF was going on that the resolution had to drop so low for such a short time.
