You know, even without any context, "scooch" is a pretty funny word.

Seriously? I mean ... how are people fawning over this?

Next Randall is going to take a picture of his morning bowel movements and slap an alt-tag on it, and people will still go gaga over it.

The first thing I thought after reading the comic was: For once I can go to the forums and not have to read posts of "oh my god! Randall is totally in my head!"

Kind of refreshing actually...

I was thinking "Wait, that's BHM? What the hell?"

Then I read the alt and laughed. For 10 seconds. I'm serious.

I suppose the constant threat of the Revenge of Black Hat Girl has left our favourite classhole on edge somewhat, resulting in a very jumpy state.

Hehe *skooch-skooch-skooch*
The elipsis alt-text makes it all the better.

What I'm curious about is the link between the two on the left and BHM. Are they just two randoms who are aware of Black Hat Man and his exploits and want to get one back at him? In which case, have they broken the fourth wall and know of his deific popularity?
Are they friends of Mr. Classhole pulling a prank, which seems unlikely for Black Hat Man to have many friendships in the first place.

His hat doubles as a "hole" rest.

Course, he should be unable to move while resting.

OK, I might be turning into the conspiracy theorist of the xkcd forums here.

I really don't think this is black hat guy. I just think this is a guy who happens to be wearing a black hat.

Clearly, "scooch scooch scooch" is Randall's transliteration of the distinctive TARDIS sound. Not my first choice, but hey, I'm not a famous comic strip author, so I'll give him a pass on this.

perhaps not so much of a time lord, but he just hijacked the TARDIS like he did with the submarine...
and the whole sound thing... "scooch scooch scooch" ... perhaps the tardis has a mechanism for travelling without black holes or whatever with a different sound... but it's not yet been shown in the Doctor Who series on bbc

yes it could quite well be the black hat girl just trying to get her own back, with cut hair, but that would mean that the person with her would have to be her scating friend with shaved hair, and i thought her skating friend was a girl...

oh, and every forum needs a good conspiracy theorist, just not more than one (wait... i'm slowly turning into one as well, and realising everyone has already...)

OK, I have not gone through all the posts here, but what was the joke?

I got the slapstick, but I think its something quite American, hence I dont get it.

Anyway - IMHO, its nowhere near over between classhole and the blackhat girl. Look at the alt text, ellipsis. This comic is nothing more than a "preganant pause"? With much more action to come. Bring it on!

sorry, second time to quote you, but i just had another thought on all of this...

maybe someone else managed to steal his hat, but just before he had edited it to catch eat them when they wore it an he caught them....
and then someone guessed his word that sprung the trap and sprung it on the next theif...

then again, he could have just edited it and then the person guessed it when the BHM was wearing it, then he's "hoisted by his own petard".... ironic

EDIT: finally found out the right tag for strike-out...

This is the mind of Randall Munroe at 4AM in the morning, after six consecutive years of no sleep.
The alt text (as possibly in many others) is the perfect reader's reaction.

I hope this is supposed to be a parody of a dumb fanboy post.

Not every xkcd comic is going to be an "instant classic." The Choices series is an instant classic. Exploits of a Mom is an instant classic. Startled is a just throw-away gag.

I liked it, basically because it was so surreal. I'd much rather see something bizarre like this than yet another variation of the "Oh me yarm being in love!" theme. Enjoyed the alt text too.

And it needs to be BHG in order to be surreal. It needs to have established characters. If you don't set up for certain expectations, there's no way to break them, hence no surrealism.

Actually, it's the chick from the Choices series:

http://www.xkcd.com/268/

After that comic, the normal stick figure guy is always seen hanging out with the normal stick figure girl.

And if you go back to the first Journal comic, you see that BHM is friends with the normal stick figure guy. This pops up in a lot of other places too: Bass, Writers Strike, etcetc.

Nothing special here, just an exchange between a bunch of stick figures who are friends.

My first thought was "Hah! I knew she'd be back!" Then came "Wait, shouldn't her hair be long?" Last was "Oh well, people can cut their hair. Yeah, that's it; she cut her hair. Of course it's her. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it." And finally, even, before I saw the alt text, "This is not over."

[Sorry, but I'm afraid I don't know how to get the name of the quoted up on the first line, but this is from DSDM]
I don't believe that's BHG. She would have come up with something more devious against BHM. Like maybe blowing up a paper bag and then popping it.

But several others' comments that BHG's strengths are her resourcefulness and adaptability. She just happened to spot BHM while talking to someone else, and took the opportunity to strike. So she didn't have a paper bag in her pocket; sometimes I don't have a paper bag in my pocket either.

First reading was "Meh."

After further reading, I got to thinking...

Am I the only one who thinks that this is setting up the scene of the continuing rivalry?

BHM knows that BHG is plotting to retake the hat. Maybe he is jumpy as a result.

That's my take anyway.
