If a girl said that to me I would become her boyfriend immediately.

Because that is fucking awesome.

EDIT: BOYfriend, dammit. Freudian slip? >_>

Okay, there is no other choice for me but to print this out and show it to my AP Stat teacher.
Amazing comic. =D

I don't get the use of the box and whisker graph. Especially with the point off to the right. Wouldn't a bar or pie graph be more useful?

Ah, how deliciously simple.
If only we thought to use such methods more often!

I wish I had been clever enough to use this argument on my now-wife eleven years ago.

I asked her one morning shortly after we started dating what she had done the previous night. "I went to the movies; I saw 'US Marshals.'"

"'US Marshals!' That's a guy film. Who were you with?"

After that, I was the outlier. And now, she's my statistically significant significant other.

Happy Valentine's day, Baby.

...no, not to show that she's an outlier... A bar or pie graph could show that he spends a lot more time with her than with other people, but it wouldn't show the average amount of time he spends or the variation in amounts of time, and so it wouldn't show whether the difference in amounts of time was significant or not.

(it's so obvious I took AP Statistics...)

Your pedantry is annoying, but your correctness is irrefubbible.

BTW, in this scenario, I'm totally the girl. Pleading with my (statistically) significant other that I am, in fact, her boyfriend. It's not pathetic... not at all...

I am soo going to keep this from the number of women I am dating lest one of them make such a compelling mathematical argument.

Madam, actually. Good madam. Actually, now that I'm finished being annoying, I can declare my love for this strip. I was totally someone's statistically significant other last year, and I have this burning urge to shove this in his face and tell him that he didn't deserve my time.

The best thing about this is not that I can email the link to my old stats professor.

It is not the fact that he will inevitably appreciate it.

It is knowing he will invariably read it aloud to his next class.

Now if I could only remember his first name so I can derive his email address from it.

If it had been BHG, would he have been her "sadistically significant other"?
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

What is this "remember" you speak of? Look up the faculty page on the department/university website.
