Alt-text: I'm normally a pretty frugal person, but I still compulsively buy any R/C aircraft that's less than $30. In the last few years, this has become a problem.

So am I. This is so not cool. I won't know the true punch line until I find it. And I can't do work until I get my xkcd fix.

Perhaps he has created a cloaking device for his alt-text. Or he screwed up like all humans ultimately do.

Randall has crossed the line from "cool webcomic guy" to "middle-aged Internet dude who's slipping."

:) Over/under on minutes till it's fixed is 3.

I'm not sure if I get this one. Does Randall Munroe hate lithium batteries or something?

I have to admit, this lack of alt-text has me rather... well, riot-ready.

TO THE STREETS, we shall find Randall, and have him write our Alt-text, and then hold him in our basements, to make witty statements upon demand!

Oh, and if you feel the need, check out my blog and my webcomic at devinhoo.com

To GodShapedBullet, I think Randall's just jealous because the kids of today have things powered by lithiums, whereas when he was a kid all he could get with one in it was a pacemaker, which hopefully he wouldn't have needed then.

Lithium batteries are making things cooler for younger people as times go on; it would be cooler to be getting younger.

Think of all the new stuff you would have wanted when you were 5.

We're saved! Alt-text arrived at +10 minutes after update...
Now that Randall has brought RC planes into the xkcd mainstream, consumption of RC planes is likely to increase vastly... this will also mean that more RC planes will be stuck in trees. Luckily, there is this thread.

Without the alt-text my life feels somehow empty. As if a part of my very soul has been rent away and in its place is nought but void.

Why, Randall, WHY?

Edit: And as if by magic, the alt-text hath appeared, salving my wounded heart.

Technical nitpick: huge difference between Lithium batteries (pacemakers) and Lithium-ion batteries (the others).

It's still funny, if I don't think about it too hard.

He should do that in a few weeks or so. Anywhy, this is kinda late but, I think that the missing alt-text has to do with the events mentioned in the alt text for 533.

Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

This is true in general as well. When you're young, you have time but no money. When you're older, you have money but no time to enjoy it. (When you're really old, you stop caring.)

Sorry 'bout the alt-text! It was sitting in my emacs buffer all evening but I didn't notice the little double-asterisk that told me the file wasn't saved yet. I hope nobody panicked too hard! I think I did this once before back near comic 300 and got a jillion emails before noticing it at like 12:30. At least I caught this one earlier. <3!

so what's the next step in lithium evolution? Is there anything below cheap plastic toys? Will it cycle back to pacemaker-esque necessity? Extinction!?

Now that the alt-text scare is (mostly) over, let's get back on topic, shall we? Personally, I don't think there are enough lithium(-ion) batteries in the world right now. Nobody likes changing batteries, which is why rechargeables are so cool. I can't count the number of times I've been thankful for their inclusion in phones, MP3 players, handheld game systems, and other "essential" devices.

EDIT: Baby rattles are below cheap plastic toys, but any babies who need electronic rattles, much less rechargeable ones, needs to reevaluate their priorities.
