Alt Text: Bad flu epidemics can hit young adults hardest because they provoke their powerful immune systems into overreaction, so to stay healthy spend the next few weeks drunk and sleep-deprived to keep yours suppressed.

Ah, XKCD. Always topical :P

God damnit. I posted the comic immediately, but it turned out to be a reply to another comic. :(

Poor old Hannalore :( She needs more drunk bobsledding :p

Is this comic saying that Twitter feeds are the new Youtube comment threads, but without the actual thread?

I admire this comic, however. All that duplicate text was actually written out separately for each instance. There's no copy-pasting of text anywhere. Except, of course, some of the dashed-lines may be duplicated :p

Mergened & edited out comic, alt-text and link for TOO LATE

This swine flu thing creeps me out. I think 2011SeniorsRule had the right idea. I'm going to go find some autistic kids.

Randall has to be topical on this issue--a flu pandemic would target his core readership.

Completely true to life.

I liked the concept in the mouseover text a bit more than the actual comic.

Just have some dude with lupus trying to drink and sleep deprive herself into a state of well-being.

According to Wikipedia and Google, my chances of getting swine flu are about 1768/6,706,993,152 = 0.0000263605% = 1 in 3,793,548. My chances of dying are 103/6,706,993,152 = 0.0000015357% = 1 in 65,116,438.

I love bacon, so I'll take my chances.

So, immediately after reading this comic, I wandered over to QC (questionablecontent.net), where Jeph's twitter feed tells me that he has put widgets for each of the characters' twitter accounts on one page. I wonder if Randall knew this when he included Hannelore in this strip...

It's amazing how blown out of proportion this "swine flu" thing is getting. I'm willing to bet more people are going to die from the common cold this year than swine flu.

I love how he actually used Hannelore's real Twitter screenname for this. It's those little touches that really "make" strips like this.

...and in the time it took me to check the URL, Jeph Jacques posted the Tweet in question. This is semi-epic.

EDIT: Hmm, "2011seniorsrule" ... I wonder if that's a sneaky "sophomoric" pun.

Honestly, at this point it's more epic when something happens in xkcd and doesn't happen in reality within 24 hours.

I'm pretty sure that tweet about Madagascar is a shot at the online browser game, Pandemic 2 (http://www.kongregate.com/games/DarkRea ... pandemic-2).
In the game, you are a virus/parasite/bacteria and the goal of the game is to infect and kill everyone on Earth. Madagascar is the hardest country/territory to infect in that bloody game.

Damn you Madagascar!! *Shakes fist*

I subscribe to @hanneloreEC, and read this comic (I was alerted via RSS) seconds before I saw her tweet. I had assumed that Randall really had performed the search in question and transcribed it into comic form, all in the time that it took Twitter to SMS me the tweet. Those who have communed with the Fail Whale will understand that this is somewhat believable.

It really is, think of the lulz that could have resulted if placed in the hands of a decent comical mind, or a very childlike/degraded one at that.

More likely a tip of the hat to the "SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING" comic, which I'm too lazy to hunt down and link to.

It's also a reference to Bio-dome.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

This comic is so, so true. I joined Twitter so I could keep tabs on the whole thing, and I have found the following useful people to follow: sanjayguptaCNN (CNN correspondent in Mexico atm), CNNSaeed (CNN Wire editor), Veratect (Bio threat tracking company), BreakingNews, and CDCemergency. That's pretty much it in terms of actual useful information and it's PLENTY to make you paranoid. After playing Pandemic 2 for a couple hours I realized how similar my Twitter feed is to the news feed in the game. Compare "Disease spotted in Australia" (Pandemic 2) and "Australia: Two Queensland residents hospitalized after trip to Mexico. Testing for swine influenza underway. #swineflu" (Twitter). I manage to get the planet except for Argentina and Madagascar, dammit. Someone should make a fake twitter, populate it with robots (and willing participants), and simulate a zombie and/or raptor apocalypse. It'd be really effective.

Yes, there's a lot (LOT) of hype around this thing. There's people on Twitter claiming it's a government conspiracy on the strength of a doctor mentioning that it was "cultured in a lab". Of course it was cultured in a lab, that's how they take samples and analyze them. Idiots. This is the EXACT type of crisis that 24-hr news loves. Lots of little "breaking news" tidbits, lots of uncertainty, lots of freaked out people. HOWEVER even if swine flu is not very fatal, it could still be a big problem, at least economically (especially compounded with a weak global economy). The IMF is already loaning money to Mexico to help deal with this thing- how much is this going to destabilize the country? It's by no means a failed state, but swine flu + drug war is hardly a good situation.

International tourism will suffer, though local tourism might pick up a bit. One of my neighbors has small children and was going to leave for Mexico in a week, but she probably won't now. She knows she'll spend all her time worrying about them getting sick even if it's not very likely. If the flu sickens people enough that they don't come to work, that will hurt companies and services. More people will call in sick to avoid being exposed. Rinse and repeat. Mexico City is pretty much a ghost town apparently- what if it starts spreading seriously in NYC/London?

That would probably make a good book/site/new media thingie. Though if you want ongoing revenue, you could go old-school and just get a collection of blogs to tell of the raptor apocalypse from a number of different perspectives.

Edit: I guess it would sort of end up being "World War Z as a serial," but if you made the plot sufficiently different it could work well.
