...I'll be honest, I don't get this. Time for some google research!

edit: oh, now I get it! And it's a lot funnier now. ...things tend to work out that way.

What, no mention of Monroe numbers? Although, considering the undead aspect, that's probably a good thing...

Edit: Apparently those don't exist. Curse you, overly suggestive memory!

Is "Cemetery" spelled wrong? :?

Really funny, though, otherwise. Love it!

Erdös isn't dead! He's left, but he never died.

Unless, of course, he should refuse to sign.

That color caught my eye, and I notice that color is somewhat rare in the comic. I had to make an account to say something about it.
I'm no art lover, but it appeals to my eye. :D

If Kevin Bacon was dead, this comic would have made more sense to the general geek-lic.*

Paul Erdos was a very prolific mathematician who collaborated with a lot of other mathematicians. So there arose a notion of an "Erdos number." Erdos has Erdos number 0. Someone who collaborates with Erdos has Erdos number 1. Someone who collaborates with one of those has Erdos number 2 and so on. It works like degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. Smaller Erdos number is better. I (and I suspect also Randall and many other geeks) gave up any hope of having Erdos number 1 when Erdos died. So the entire math department is taking advantage of the return of the dead to get Erdos number 1.

Now, a few years back, someone defined the Erdos-Bacon number as the sum of your Erdos number and your Bacon number (if both are defined). The set of people who a finite Erdos-Bacon number is very tiny. Erdos himself, Andrew Wiles are a few. The only actor or actress of the top of my head who has finite EB is Danica McKellar who played Winny on the Wonder Years.

Also, Hank Aaron sort of have Erdos number 1. But someone else can tell that story if they want...

Heehee. The Kevin Bacon part was a nice hint for us non-nerds.

On a semi-related note, my Bacon Number is five, through Ben Burtt.

I registered this for the sole purpose of pointing out that "Cemetary" is actually spelled "Cemetery."

Why is everyone telling Randall this? If its misspelled then you should let the cemetery owner know about it.

His name is spelled Erdős, not Erdös. It's Hungarian.

Problem with this comic is, Kevin Bacon aint dead. He did get hit pretty hard by the Bernie Madoff scandal though, and now is doing HBO movies to earn some dough. Poor guy, can't just sit on his Footloose/Animal House money anymore.

That's not really a problem with the comic. The world is ending, so time is limited whether or not Bacon is alive.

I don't think it counts if he didn't actually co-author it.

Prior to understanding who Erdős was, I thought they were signing an agreement of some form to not be harmed. Beret Man Cameo - he should have been in his future travelling kayak.

True, but it's the main character's own damn fault for not getting that part out of the way earlier.

Wow.. Randall-get-out-of-my-head moment here. Out of boredom I just spent the last few hours reading about the zombie apocalypse.

I didn't get this at first, but after reading JoshuaZ's post, it's pretty good.

Sure, but to be fair, there wasn't as much incentive to do so before... the gain in awesomeness moving from finite Erdős number to finite E-B number is much higher than moving from neither to just a Bacon number...

An important point. Of course, the fact that the world is ending may perhaps be even more important...

...which must invite the question, where will all of the newly risen dead people live, absent a world? Why bother rising at all? (This question also taxes my brain on a Monday morning, with the difference that there IS a world, I just don't CARE about it).

Also, if the seas turn to blood, and the skies burn, would that mean that the heat of the skies will congeal the seas, and we could save on transcontinental airline tickets by simply driving across the hardened surface?

Great comic, loved it.

Right now the first I can think of is 4:

I went to high school with Tyler Hilton
Who was in Walk the Line with Reese Witherspoon
Who was in Sweet Home Alabama with Fred Ward
Who was in Tremors with Kevin Bacon

I wonder how many webcomics you'd have to read to always have one be addressing zombies? Maybe 3? Webcomic people really like zombies.

While I doubt I have an Erdos number, I do have a Bacon number of 3. I appeared (thanks to pre-recorded footage, but still), with the guys from http://www.loadingreadyrun.com in this bonus video. Several of the people present there appeared two videos with Wil Wheaton (here and here). Wil Wheaton appeared with Kevin Bacon in She's Having a Baby. Thus, Wil has a bacon number of 1, the LRR guys have a Bacon number of 2, and I have a Bacon number of 3.

Now I just need to find a way to connect myself to Paul Erdos....
