0404: "404 - Not Found"

Postby 4=5 » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:47 am UTC

remember when we were discussing what mr Munroe should do for comic 300?
I was messing around on the site out of boredom, trying to see if I could find the next comic early and this time it turns out Randall has uploaded wednesday's comic aready,
a clever meta making fun of the dedicated comic checker and people who put too much meaning to numbers.
I give you comic number 404!

Quoth the server?

It would be neat if the comic number were skipped, akin to the idea of skipping the numbering of the 13th floor. Of course, the observant among us reading 405 would know which comic we were really reading.

I think you may have blown Randall's big surprise.

He's been secretly gleeful for months about reaching comic 404.

As such, he's not going to let you see comic 403. And will possibly charge you for today's comic

Finally, his 413th comic is going to be focused on my ego.
Away, you scullion! you rampallion! You fustilarian! I'll tickle your catastrophe.

The forum reaction to #417 will just be more of the same, of course... but then, such is life when the strip is this popular.

Code: Select all

void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

I would also like to see him redirect http://xkcd.com/3.14/ to something related to pi, such as this, this, or this.

It gives me a 404 for any comic I try that doesn't exist, not just #404.

I will, however, be disappointed if comic 404 is not at all relevant.

And just imagine if the trend continues:
  • Number 406 will be something that's universally taboo;
  • 411 - well, maybe those V14GR@ e-mails are good for something after all;
  • 417 won't be worth reading, we know we're in for disappointment;
  • 422's punchline will be eloquent, but entirely incomprehensible;
  • 500 will crash something every time someone tries to view it;
  • 501 will be fine, except nobody ever bothered to program it;
  • and 509 will be permanently slashdotted.

Sigh... it's amazing how one comic has so many ways to go wrong ;) :roll:

Contrary to the beliefs of many, I believe Randall did produce a comic 404, as shown in the attachment below.

comic404.png
comic404.png (3.45 KiB) Viewed 7411 times

http://xkcd.com/404/
Unfortunately, this masterpiece was not endowed with alt text.

Personally, I believe the subtle nuances of this comic provide us with a deeper understanding of Randall's emotional baggage, the hyphen being a metaphor for a bond with a certain person - note how there is a space between "404", the hyphen and "Not Found" - evidently, the bond is broken! (as well as requiring the spaces to be grammatically correct.)

It should be noted that there are plenty of other ways of reaching this comic - for example,
http://xkcd.com/brokenheart/ will yield the exact same comic. This is evidently an important comic!

That's because everybody who would care enough to define your semantics also thinks you are superfluous in a free web.

This is rather depressing.

Heh, I was going to comment on comic 404 being not found a few days ago, then somehow couldn't be bothered; then I thought how great it would be if there was no comic 404 and it always remained as a '404 - Not found' page; now I find this thread and see that it's all come to pass!

It's kind of a shame that comic 404 fell not quite smack bang on the 1st of April too. It would have made a better joke than the webcomic link mix-up IMHO.

Darnd't

Edit: Aha! It should be noted that the other two threads in here don't include a link to the comic (in one of them) or an image of the comic (in the other). Therefore, this is the only one to fulfill the requirements of the section!

A second edit (gosh, it's all go here): Actually, an image is not a prerequisite. However, a link is, and some sort of commentary is. The other threads failed to provide one of other of these things. This thread wins.

I was on the 405 page, clicked 'Prev' and saw it going tor 403.
I wondered, and started typing on IRC:
"Huh? Why does xkcd skip comic 404?"
I entered 404 in my browser
"Huh? Why does 404 give a [...]"
and I realized, xkcd remains great!
