Or could be the fact that I need more sleep... but thanks for the laugh none the less.

Guys, don't you understand? This is xkcd, and anything, absolutely anything Randall EVER puts up in it is immediately awesome and hilarious and ANYONE who sees it, in whatever context and situation, has to understand it immediately and send thanks and praises to Randall as effusively as he can! Also, what if he posts actual porn on the front page? IT DOESN'T MATTER, IT'S XKCD THEREFORE IT RULES.

[/sarcasm]

This is certainly the first time I fail to get a xkcd even after research.

My understanding is that they're just doing it for kicks, and the Wiki line is an unrelated second punchline, like the alt-text tends to be.

Also, I thought it was pretty funny. How it starts all professional and academic-seeming, then turns out to be a couple at a TGIF. (There's a name for that, but whatever.) Seems I'm the only one though...

Also also, wencher, that is a very spectacularly ugly HP mouse. Nice hand though. I see what you did thar.

Also also also:

I'm told that's what Python is for. :D

This is the turning point that turned xkcd in my mind from "rapidly-declining pandering has-been" to "there is a mosquito shaped hole in my teeth."

Yup, I have to take jokes from Zero Punctuation to accurately describe the pure confusion and apprehension this comic gives me.

What's that? The joke doesn't make sense in this context? Well fuck you, that's how bad xkcd has gotten.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go weep in the corner with a tube of soothing cream.

I've noticed that I don't really find some of the XKCD comics all that funny. I don't think they are all meant to be humorous. Some of them are absurd, some of them are making a point, some of them are on the cutesy/sentimental side.

Not to be crude.. but your dad knows about bras (if not apologize to your mom for me). I'm sure he's struggled with them as much as the rest of us. He might find the comic clever and funny.

Oh, I'm aware he probably knows about unclasping bras (and more, based on the computer history, and the fact that I exist). Didn't make it any less awkward, though. Everyone in my family could watch "Zach and Miri (make a porno)", find it hilarious, and still refuse to admit to each other they have seen it or enjoyed it. My family is pretty conservative in that respect, though. I prefer it that way, personally. :| But, then again, that is probably just because it is how I was raised.

When I look at the bottom of panel 2, I see a tiny little stick figure shoving his head up Megan's anus.

Based on my limited knowledge of anatomy texts, I assumed that "plates" basically has the same meaning as "figure" (Figure A, etc.) in other texts (there's also the rather obvious "photographic plates").

Also, as someone on "xkcd sucks" said:
The joke is made more clear by the alt-text. It's not exactly a joke, as such - more of a humorous observation regarding the way anatomy photos, particularly the ones on wikipedia, often look a bit like someone just climbed up on a table and got their partner to start snapping away happily.

He has taken that idea and extrapolated it to present a scenario involving two people producing anatomy photos in the middle of a TGI Friday's.

I would also like to point out that human nudity ≠ porn... not in every case, of course, but still. It really depends on the context.

And if looking at this particular comic at work has a better chance of getting you fired than looking at xkcd (or any other webcomic) at work in general... well, your workplace is pretty odd.

[And yeah, I registered just to add my two cents.]
[Also: I haven't been to a TGI Friday's in a while, but now I really want to go to one.]

If, say, you work for the government, you can surf on your lunch break, etc, as I was doing today. If you get to an image like this, it can get you fired. I by no means am saying that would be Randall's 'fault', but I (and many others) simply can't afford to check this at work. The other solution is him offering to, in the case of comics like this, simply post a cover page that indicates the comic might be NSFW/graphic. It would neither be difficult to do, nor an extraordinary inconvenience.

While I see where some of you are coming from, I don't really think it's Randall's responsibility to tell you that you shouldn't check XKCD at work because of possible offensive content. It would have been courteous for him to do so, but there's no obligation to say "WARNING, TODAY'S COMIC IS NSFW!"

Believe it or not, where I live, a lot of people don't have internet at home. This is obviously not the case for me, but it is a real disappointment for them. And again, this is on a break, so it's not as if checking personal websites is some terrible travesty.

edit: and to be clear, I DON'T think he has an obligation to say it's NSFW, I simply think it would be a nice courtesy that would allow more people to share and enjoy the site, and it wouldn't involve some drastic change or terrible amount of work.

*shocked at how many people find nudity offensive*

Last time a colleague saw tits in my "Friends" page on LJ, he yelled: "Hey, A. is looking at TITS!!!". Most of the answers from everybody else were along the lines of: "LINK PLZ!!11"

Also made me remember, how I had to browse through a shitload of kinky sex toy, S&M paraphrenelia, and whatnot at work. A site owner called, complaining about pics on his site loading slowly, so we had to login and twerk'n'test. Turned out to be some Swedish sex shop... Still praying for that awful gay-porn hoster customer we have not to call with similar requests. Ugh...

I don't get what the point of this is, besides just being a fleeting and disgusting idea inexplicably turned into a comic that breaks from the usual stick-figure art style at the worst possible time.

Yeah, I...really don't even know what to say about this.

Except the "this is a family establishment" reaction to something wildly inappropriate is a really old joke. I can vaguely recall seeing it in several movies/tv shows, although I don't know what they were.

And to borrow a point from xkcdsucks (sorry), what is the deal with Megan? The sex jokes about her specifically is starting to unsettle me.

That guy who posted the cyst picture made this make a little more sense, but the main genital entries were not amateurish enough for it to be relevant. And if you're going in depth, that's a little weird.

Ah. laddies. Back in ye olden days, pictures for printing were litho-style. ie. the artist engraved the picture on a metal or wooden PLATE, and the impressions were transferred to paper. This was the easiest way by which pictures could be reproduced. Think Gray's Anatomy (the textbook, not the tv show).

Hence my confusion. Randall is obviously trying to allude to an anatomy textbook by using the term 'plate'. But how can you call a photograph a plate? A plate is a line drawing. It'd be like calling an xkcd comic a photo.

ALTHOUGH. The modern day anatomy textbook (Netter's) uses hand drawn pictures, that are not litho. But still calls them plates. So there must be some sort of tradition.

I'm definitely with the WTF!? crowd.

The joke wasn't especially bad. The fact that I opened this in a lecture theatre waiting for the lecture to start made it far less amusing. I'm glad the people directly behind me read xkcd too, so I don't have to explain anything.

I think I might remove the comic site from my bookmarks, and just go straight to the forums from now on. I'm not sure this comic is worth it any more.

Gee, a (poorly drawn) nipple causing all this ruckus? Really? I wasn't aware that nipples had such power. I find it oddly funny when sexual content makes xkcd readers jump all over the place. Aren't we supposed to be mature enough to accept such things? Or are we rather supposed to blush and look away whenever someone says the word 'boob'?

This one is not Randall's best, but honestly, if you're offended by it, I kindly suggest that you please go out more.

I asked around with my friends to see if anyone I knew was "caught" at work looking at these "NSFW" pics. I was surprised when one guy said:

"I did view it at work and my supervisor did see it"

He continued

"He stopped and asked me what was that. I told him it's XKCD, and they are usually not that graphic. He came to the computer and took the mouse and looked over the page. He said 'No, they usually are not that graphic', then left looking a bit upset" and that he "haven't heard about it since"
