There's rather a lot of stuff on here I can't read either. E.g. the text by the G in "Blogipeligo". Or for that matter, the stuff above the "The" in the same place, or to the northeast of the "EL"

Oh, and I would *so* buy a poster

Please! I must have a poster of this for my dorm room! It's too awesome!

Also, for those who dissent against the public opinion of this panel's awesomeness based on its supposed "inaccuracy," maybe you should consider that this is his opinion, and not necessarily canon? Either way, I'd respect RM's opinions anyday.

...that's right. We're on an acronymic basis.

This is awesome!
Now whenever someone asks me why I'm such a big fan of xkcd, and why it's so brilliant - I just point 'em to this.

I wish there was a hi-res version of this image...

What, Post Secret, Washington Post/Shipwreck of the S.S. Howard Dean, and Cory Doctorow's Balloon respectively?

I have no clue how you actually figured out Post Secret; I am running magnifier and looking at it at something like 4x and I could barely make it out. Good work.

Actually, I don't think it's the Washington Post. I think it's the Huffington Post.

Poster, please. 1m x 1m. I'd order it immediately; still need something geeky and cool for my room. :)

I especially love the compass rose. I thought it was just, well, a compass rose, then I saw the "island" caption. Very conveniently shaped geography for mapmakers.

Me too! I want a poster!

Though I was disappointed that there was no Forum Whore isle, or an Island of Gaming Discussion Forums. Or a webcomic discussion archipelago for that matter. Certainly the gigantic landmass that Penny Arcade would create should be suitable for map-making?

I think you're right. Also, on further analysis, I don't think that's Post Secret, as that's kinda a part of LJ. I think it's "Post *rt" with the *rt possibly starting with a 'w'.

This is one of my favorite comics in a long while. High-larious.

Unguided wrote:shouldn't 4Chan be in the sea of memes?

And I swear it's bigger than that. I mean, come on. Even MIT is bigger on that map, and they're only some 10,000 people.

Unguided wrote:Why are the webcomics missing from the Ocean of Subculture?

Yep, we need webcomics too. Then xkcd could actually be represented properly.

kisielk wrote:A long time xkcd reader, but first time forum poster. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite xkcd comics. Just want to support the poster concept. Also, how about an even higher-res (printable) version of the image or even an SVG version?

YES! I would absolutely love an SVG version.

I've also seen something similar on 4chan a while back, but this is by far better. I only have a few objections:

1: Maddox isn't there, or I didn't notice.

2: DeviantArt should border Furries.

3: There should be an Emo-Only nation on the Shores of The Sea of Angst.

4: Shouldn't there be a bottomless vortex in the Sea of Memes named Goatse on there? :P

Nope, Runescape dwarfs EQ2 if we're talking number of players. EQ2 probably has more revenue.

1) Where is the porn? Unless that's represented by the water....Which now that I think about it makes sense.

2) I think a smallish island of webcomic belongs somewhere in the Sea of Subculture, to the East.

3) Shouldn't Google's Volcano Fortress belong in the Gulf of Youtube?

4) 2ch is not that small, and belongs on the other side of the Digg Achapellego in the Sea of Culture. I'm guessing the suveyer didn't go all the way around the island.

5) I love how the AOL chat rooms and IRC Isles are as far apart as they can possably be.

6) Where is slashdot^H^H^H^H^H^H? Never mind, I found it.

I'm personally slightly incensed by the lack of Everything2, but I expect that's to the southeast of SourceForge. That or sunk.

Lots of people want a bigger version. Have you checked the one you get by clicking on the image? The obvious escapes many.

This is so awesome. Add me to the "I need postery goodness!" list.

I somehow noticed "Gays of Web 2.0" early on, thought I misread it, then looked down and noticed the Straits of Web 2.0 and just started laughing hysterically.

I feel like Neopets should be on there somewhere. Maybe not, though; I have no idea how big it actually is.

edit: as for people wondering about porn, google, etc.: though very popular those aren't really online communities, which is what this is supposed to be a map of.

I keep thinking there's something missing... but then I find he's put it in there... very good job :) I want a poster too.

Definitely webcomics should be on there. Penny-Arcade etc must have quite large communities? Are ridiculously out of date Geocities pages there anywhere? ooh, also would things like eBay and Amazon count? Ooh and imdb...

Anyway, Randall's map is definitely the best out of the ones I've seen, not because it's the only one not made in MS Paint but because it has a compass that categorises things neatly :) Analysis = teh win

Quite a comprehensive map.
I feel like Neopets should be on there somewhere. Maybe not, though; I have no idea how big it actually is.

Should it be on the island to the bottom right of WoW? It seems the right spot for it.

There probably should be a spot for all those desolated geocities pages and the like - perhaps another sunken island like Usenet.

And what's the Lonely Island about? I feel like I'm missing something there.

And I fully support a poster, perhaps edited for things people have suggested. Alternitively, I could just label some of the blank islands.

This map is incomplete.

It does not show the Ukranian side of the internet.

But that actually just looks like the New Jersey Turnpike.

Or was it an impact crater, I forget.

Suffice it to say that it's AMAZING.

Love the comic, been reading it for quite a while, but this latest one finally got me to register here.

I like it, but have some comments.

- 4chan (and possibly 2channel (2ch? 2chan? which one do you mean?), I don't know because I don't go there) should be further to the South. I think their position relative to eachother works, and the size is about right (though 2channel could be a bit bigger) but their place on the map is wrong. Somewhere near the Sea of Trolls and the Sea of Memes would fit. As much as 4chan would hate to admit it, it belongs right between SA and YTMND. Or if you're really looking to please the 4channers, make an Ocean of Piss and place 4chan right in the middle of it. But that's probably too much to ask.

- Runescape is probably too large. Either that or WoW is too small. I don't have any exact numbers, but from what I know WoW is quite a bit more larger (more larger? oh well) than RS than it is in this picture.

- Second life should be to the East of MMO land. It should be pretty much half in MMO land and half with the Anthropomorphic Dragons. People who've played SL will know why (Furries, thousands of them!).

- Where is Gaia Online? As much as I dislike the place, it's a pretty big community from what I've heard and seen. Way bigger than, say, Something Aweful.

xkcd:
1) You are awesome.
2) How do you read my mind? I ask merely out of interest and hopes of future tutelage, and not ill will...
3) SVG version (&)|(|) poster. I beg of you!

Aside from what everyone else has mentioned, I really love the pi on the intellectual side of the Rose-Compass shaped island.

And whatever you say... I WILL use it for navigation! haHA!

.... Damn, I ended up in the Compass-Rose-shaped-island. I knew I shoulda taken that left turn at Boing Boing.

Updates and improvements would be welcome tho, bet it was an evil plan to make text pieces so small that they are unreadable...

They don't seem to be as of this moment. But who knows what updates will bring?

Gaia Online is notable for having the biggest forum. I looked around there once. You look at the listings, refresh the page, and the threads you just saw are now 10 pages down.

EDIT: Well not quite. It's still a bit insane though.
