Title Text:
It may be a fundamentally empty experience, but holy crap the Droid's 265 ppi screen is amazing.

I'm a fan of the Droid. I have a crappy samsung phone, though. Canada sucks for the whole cell business.

Edit: Whoops, 662, not 622.

Apple is going to TI99/4A themselves to death if they don't watch out.
Try the Printifier for xkcd. You can now scale the comic between 50 and 150%.

I find these very useful: Common Errors in English Usage (web site) and Eats, Shoots & Leaves (book). You may, too.

I really wish that AT&T would get an android product, and I hope for the love of all that is shiny that whenever they finally do, I want it to have a standard mini-usb connector for charging/data. Samsung and Moto are notorious for proprietary bullhonkey.

If I wasn't stuck in a two-year contract with at&t, I would totally hook up with droid

I must be out of the loop 'cuz I haven't been aware of the droid. Not that I've been looking into buying a new phone or anything.

Y'ar. I wish my birthday comic was better than this.
Also, iPhone > Droid, mostly because the ease of leaving everything up to iTunes blows the amazingness out of Motorola.

Looks like the score is Droid: 6 (including Randall), iPhone: 2, Zune: 1

We need a legitimate poll here...

I just pre-ordered my Nokia N900, which has similar specs to the droid (800x480 screen, similar processor), but comes with 32GB built in (plus an optional microSD card). It also runs Maemo, which is a full Linux distribution, based on Debian -- it can even run some Debian packages unmodified, like OpenOffice. Android is nice (I currently have a G1), but Maemo is far more developer friendly, especially if you don't want to mess with Java. I used to have an N800, but it got stolen.

Plus, I don't want to get a phone that is subsidized by Verizon (they have a bad history of crippling their phones). The N900 works with T-Mobile or AT&T.

EDIT: NewEgg is running a killer deal on the N900 for pre-orders.

Well zune isn't really a phone, its an mp3 player. Unless they really changed the design. (I have one of the really old 1st gen ones). But I'm gonna go ahead and throw my support behind it too

Shouldn't the thread title have "Discussion" in it?

Anyways, Blackberry ftw? Although all I have is the Blackberry Flip, so I don't really have an opinion in terms of smartphones.

i too debated getting the iphone for the last 1.25 years, once i heard about the Sholes/Tao/Droid i knew my mind was made. The Big Red Ma Bell is way better than the Big Blue Ma Bell.

can't wait to use google maps navigation to find my way around cape cod this weekend.

love my droid.... but have yet to find a good list of apps that isn't outdated (and t-mobile specific)

I never thought I'd see 'facsimile' in an xkcd.

Bravo.

Also, hi joee.

By droid, they mean "android", right? I don't think I could surf the net on a R4D4.

My cell phone calls people.

That's all I ask of it. Well, it does a couple of other things like SMS, multimedia messages, and a built in phone, but screw it. My cell phone is for calling people.

As far as i can tell, Android (2.0!) is the operating system and Motorola Droid is the phone itself. I don't know much about it, Gizmodo reviewed it and says that it's the second best phone out right now, second only to the iPhone 3GS. http://gizmodo.com/5396168/motorola-droid-review

i must admit i'm really split between the two, and i want to get one of the two in the next month or two, i hear the droids physical keyboard is a pain to type with, and everyone i know with an iphone basically wants to perform cunnilingus on it as often as possible.. i love the idea of android though, and hate apple with a passion..

I think im just going to follow this topic for a couple days...xkcd would never steer me wrong, and if anyone asks why i got it i can justify it by using monroe's law

p.s. saw this the other day, law number one, thats right http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2009/11/10-geeky-laws-that-should-exist-but-dont/

Can't believe no one's caught this yet. DPI, Randall, not "ppi," for Dots Per Inch.

Edit: I stand corrected. He is referring to pixels.

Logged in to up-vote the droid.

Physical keyboard ... 55 monies.
Screen resolution greater than my computer ... 105 monies.
Android 2.0 ... 40 monies.

No ties to iTunes, no objective C, no requirement of OSX for development, ungimped by VZ, actual customization options, removable battery, microsd slot, standard usb port, awesome boot-up sound ... priceless.

I too would like that app., but in more of a Matrix, plug me in sense. I think my hardware has been mostly incompatible with it so far, but with all the recent upgrades in software technology, I think there's hope.

Droid rules.
i want a phone mostly for the web and for making my own apps, not music and looking cool. the droids is really awesome online (especially since its screen is a third the size of my home computers) and you can make your own programs.
double win for droid.
Also, the gps looks ridiculously good, but i have not played with it yet.

Couple interesting facts I'd like to point out.
1. The HTC Droid is a lot like the Motorola Droid, but without the keyboard and with Android 1.5 instead of 2.0. HTC has said they will update to 2.0 when they are done working on it for their phones. It's also cheaper.
2. There is a message at the bottom of Motorola's Droid page. "DROID is a trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd. and its related companies. Used under license." So yes, it IS R2D2.

Palm Pre for the win.

It comes with vi pre-installed (no joke -- although you need to access developer mode via the Konami code to get to it).

The most Linux-y smartphone out there in my opinion. For example, within a few days of its release about 1700 Linux packages were ported by the community to it.

Also, physical keyboard, great multi-application interface, stupendous Synergy features, and a cost-of-ownership that's far less than its competitors (Sprint's unlimited mobile-to-mobile means that to vast majority of people, the $70 a month unlimited data plan with the Pre is comparable to the $150 a month unlimited data plan of the iPhone). I use my Pre for my internet at home too with tethering.

!? Where do you live that your phone bills are so high? My iPhone unlimited (their all unlimited) plan is a little less then $70 a month. 150 is insane.

Maybe I'm reading this chart wrong?

130 (unlimited voice + data) + 20 (unlimited text) = 150
It does seem pretty high; I was rather surprised when I read that too.

the sad part about this comic is that they forgot the nokia n900... which surpasses all pocket sized de\/ices... period. It seems nokia pushes the en\/elope but gets no press. it's sad really because it's honestly been the best ultra mobile de\/ice on the market since the n800. The n900 outperforms any phone on the market in all ways and it's hilarious because it's not marketed as a phone. so i say neither the droid nor the iturd. for 60 bucks more you can ha\/e a REAL pc in your pocket. and don't get me started on HTC... they ha\/e crap hardware compared to nokia. haha. :-p but if you're seriously looking at these phones, hit the n900. oh.. and it works on any network cept \/erizon... because \/erizon is a bunch of turds that won't switch o\/er to the standardized cell market because they're for screwing their customers. :-p btw, if you reply to this with flaming, i, and nobody else cares. I for one won't re-read this... just an educational post before you drop 500 dollars and find out there's something better in the same price range. :-p oh... and one more note... the same phone on a cdma network has a shorter battery life comparatively.

iTunes on Windows installs its own USB drivers, is slow as hell and slows down the PC when running, tries to install other Apple products with every update and is just generally awful. It might be fine on OSX, but it blows on windows.

Well 130 is for the unlimited family plan, that's 2 different lines. it's 70 for the basic (at&t nation one).
And fuck paying for texting. Texting is the biggest rip off in the cell phone industry.
If you have a smartphone, there are plenty of text by internet options that are free.
Or you could just an IM client, most of which are available on newer phones.

up until a few mintues ago they f*cked their customers with drm. and will likely do it again. it's just a pita. iturds are a pita in general. Not worth the time or effort to get around when you can buy SOOOO much better for the same price or less. :-p Open your eyes and do some real research, honestly... do us all a fa\/or. haha. I bought an n800 and installed canola for a lot less and more functionality than an iturd at the time that i bought it. :-p

My phone also has radio, if only because there doesn't seem to be any other cheap portable device which handles radio around here.

Usage of my cell phone:
1) Radio
2) SMS (because I can reply while the radio is still running)
3) Sudoku (nothing like boredom) (though I still have the radio running regardless)
4) Phone

Also, iTunes is getting irritating for me, simply because it keeps trying to sneak into my systems with quicktime.
I am NOT a snake.

Opinions discussed are not necessarily the opinions of the people discussing them.
