0264: "Choices: Part 1"

Title text: Wait, damn, I spotted a new email on the last refresh.

It's a continuing XKCD theme. Hole in the universe appears in your wall? Of course you go through it. How else would you find out what's on the other side?

I had everything set up to start this topic, but then I go over to IWC! and find we have new rank names. I got sidetracked looking for the upper and lower limits of each rank, and before I knew it it was past midnight.

I like how the door just...appears. Now I'm curious as to what will happen next!

It's funny how refreshing your webpage makes a sound in the xkcdverse, but the universe making a hole in your wall goes without sound.
EDIT: HOORAY for five updates this week!

I didn't even notice the five update thing. YAY! Also, the chair didn't make a sound either when it tipped over. I guess only things which normally wouldn't make a sound make sounds.

A very good comic.

I do believe I see the theme present in the comic pertaining to the differences between a normal person and a scientist, and their subsequent responses to being struck by lightning after yanking on a lever. The normal person walks away afraid, whereas the scientist is entertained by the thought of a lightning machine. The theme of curiosity seems to occur a lot in the xkcdverse, which I find to be pretty awesome.

Then of course, all of the fun stuff of generating a giant rift in the wall from refreshing... ahhhh, I can't wait for the other parts :)
Have A Nice Day :)

That'd be awesome. She better meet maxwell's demon (who is a hot chick) and have hot lesbian interaction with her.

Edit: Also *refresh* is an action, not a sound, obviously just to show that the click is refreshing in order for the Alt-text to work.

My first thought was to wish that this would happen to me.

My second thought was that if I were to get off the computer, I would have a chance to see more of this universe while I'm waiting for a wormhole to appear in my wall.

My third thought was that wikipedia probably has an interesting article on cosmic macrostructures.

MY first thought was whether he drew it or actually tore a piece of paper to make the cosmic tear. Then I decided it didn't matter because it'll probably have an epic payoff.

Did anyone even catch that this week it updates every day!

YES, now Tuesdays and Thursdays can be complete as well!

This also reminds me of the older comics which is exciting. It's nice to have some reoccurring themes or comics that tie in with each other.

Probably why I constantly read Questionable Content as well. (Except it's updates are so random at night)

I was thinking of the old computer game Loom. For some reason that game comes up all the time to me in these fora.

At first I thought xkcd had gone the way of most comics and gone to graphics tablet. Now I'm thinking that the rip is a rip in the paper with the alternate universe page behind and that the last frame is colour reversed.

/me returns from the GIMP.

Looks like it.

Just to clarify: The big white cosmic rift thing in the last panel is supposed to be the hole seen from the other side, right? That was my first thought and they are sort of the same shape, but I'm not altogether certain now.

Hooray for story arcs!

And for five updates this week!

I wonder why he's doing this, though. Is he trying to hook us into a heightened stated of xkcd, and just when we become addicted, it goes back to three a week and the five a week is for paying subscribers only?

Nah, Randall wouldn't do that...

Looks to me more like part of a Mandelbrot Set or other fractal than the large scale structure of the universe...

but meh, I don't think that's the point exactly :)

I've just finished reading House Of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski. In that book, doors did just appear when you weren't looking. Walls vanished. And they all did so in a space that plainly didn't exist, due to the door being in an outside wall, and the space not existing on the other side.

Good horror through not having anything tangible to be scared of, but huge disappointment in the end of the book - I spotted a massive flaw in the plot, and then there was nothin but an anticlimax and a honking huge appendix to follow.

I nearly recommend it.

My first thought was a fractal (with some color effects so it doesn't look as fractally), but I don't think mandlebrot. Could be custom generated.

Maybe I'm just a coward, but it seemed to me like she looked back and tried to decide whether to flee from the giant spacerift through the door or, as she ended up doing, go through the rift.
