It looks just like some construction zone in Arizona, and yet it's something infinitely more than that. So close, and yet...

This comic is absolutely heartbreaking and makes me want to cry every time I read it.

Hopefully in the future when we colonize Mars we will find this marvel, dust it off, and then let it gather more dust in a museum for all to see.

There's a truly awesome photograph in this article - a photograph I never dreamed I'd see. Sometimes people do some pretty cool stuff. Robots, too.

God damn it, Asimov never made me cry about a robot. Clarke never managed it, nor Heinlein or Bradbury - but I read this story, and I thought of Spirit.

Just to register that APOD has linked to this comic on the 9th aniversary of its landing.

Pshaw. It took WALL-E several hundred years to get some company, yet this robot starts whining in a little over a decade?

Surprised nobody's posted yet... Opportunity passed its tenth anniversary on Mars just a few days ago, on the 25th. Still roving, still dropping SCIENCE. Talk about badasses.

According to Wikipedia, the primary issue is that Spirit is stuck in some soft soil.

If Curiosity was in relatively close proximity, could it pull Spirit out?

I think pulling is out of the question, but it might have an opportunity at pushing Spirit out.
However, doesn't Curiosity have better things to do than trying to fetch a dead robot from its grave? :P

If the male mind truly were a machine it would consist of a shaft and a bushing.

This piece is truly a roundhouse kick in the feels, as debilitating as the Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark” starring Fry’s dog.
nice.
I hear velociraptor tastes like chicken.
