Seriously, what's an "Honor Society"??? I'm sure one of you nice Americans will help out those of us who didn't attend a US school.
Also, in British English, "honor" is spelt "honou
r". Similar for favor/favour, etc. I know it's the correct spelling for US English, just looks different to the unfamiliar eye.
For most foreigners, the reference to honor societies is of course meaningless. It's a weird US thing, like the sport they call "football". *
And like the way that they can't spell "honour".
These are elitist societies found in many US educational institutions, with a heavy bias towards middle class and wealthy members. They have little purpose other than self-promotion of the societies and their members. Any benefits to the public, like charitable fund-raising, are just side effects to try to justify the elitism.
That's what Randall is targeting. It explains itself to USAians, but not to the rest of us.
* Non-USAians should Google "handegg", to get an explanation. In essence, it's rugby for wimps, who wear armour in case they might get a nasty bruise.
