He pistolwhipped the underling who unplugged the UPS, right after jamming an OC-48 cable into Hans' eye socket.

I'd buy a bunch.... have them handy in my office for when things go wrong and I need a few favors!

So, I'm hearing SysAdmin=wrong path. Would it be detrimental then, to have managed my home network since I was ten (to the point that my brother will wake me up at 12:30 because the network's down)?

I wouldn't say "wrong" but it is different. It depends upon the person and the actual job. Scott Adams says it's a lot like being a Surgeon except that you don't get your hands all gooey.

After fixing the network at 12:30 in the morning, did you get a rush from the feeling of self-confidence, did you feel proud of what you had accomplished? If so, you just might be a natural born SysAdmin. Or did you wish you had just stayed in bed and let someone else take care of it?

It can be a very rewarding career path. I have had people cry tears of joy and hug me just because I arrived on site to fix their problem. But you've got to be ready to roll 24x7 so if you want to have any control over your own free time or if you get cold in a 68 degree room, you might want to look elsewhere.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

68°F = 20°C ... cold ... I don't get it.

I agree, the ultimate test.

since when is 68 equal to 20?!
WTF
they air condition server rooms more. hence the 68 degrees. he means that if you would get cold in the rooms the servers are at, you might not want to be in that field.

Well, I guess it felt nice.

He *might* have meant 20°C. But 68°F is fine by me. As long as I can wear a long sleeve shirt.

Typo, I meant to write 20°C ... obviously.

Oh ... my image of server rooms is always "very hot" ... our first server room had a little cooling, but was still the hottest room ... the second one after being moved to a different university building had no cooling at all and not even a window in contrast to the first one. Freezing was not the problem either way. But then I did not have to spend a whole lot of time in the server room, I did the administration from my desk in the lab. It still got kind of warm with the 40 or so computers in it, especially if 80 or so freshmen were added, but not unbearable as in the server room itself.

Clearly, this was the Bastard Operator From Hell (http://www.bofh.net/).

And by the way, was he wearing a black hat?

Boot off that with gPXE? gPXE + DHCP + iSCSI = automagic dickless servers ftw..

I must admit i was impressed yesterday when one of my colleagues responded to a a nagios warning in under a minute. At 8:30 am, on a sunday, when they weren't rostered on or on call. (my second thought was, wow your making me look bad here.)

Heh, been leaning towards zenoss lately myself, have nagios in a current environment, looking to roll zenoss out across the new/replacement one..

BTW, sysadmin t-shirts come in 2 sizes: M and XXXL ;)

Because those are the two sizes of sysadmins, of course. The XXXLs have a harder time with air ducts, but that just makes their successes more impressive.

Envision some indistinguished-looking guy standing on a local street, holding a sign:

Will stand on line to buy
the xkcd T-shirt imprint of
Devotion to Duty

That guy is me.

Randall, you got it all in one take. Thank you!

Are there prints/shirts up for this yet?

I need about 4 framed signed prints and 6+ shirts.

I fscking tempted to just buy several dozen in different sizes so I can hand them out as prizes to dedicated sysadmins I encounter over the next few years...

On the other hand I've almost resorted to cafepress but with the amount of folks I know are here that want these I'm holding off in the hope that the guy that made the comic in the first place can get my money for this.
