Great comic, but I think the alt text is even funnier. I could hear the voice in my head

You know, I've watched one of these about kissing that was actually pretty well done and pretty cute. Now that I know they have them about sex, I really must look this up. Oh internet...will you never cease to turn all of life into a step by step process one can take notes on?

Edit - Oh...this is about video games.....sigh. Why did I go to PAX again? I'm really not sure.

Suggestion: Separate thread for people to discuss whether or not the comic was up to par. Maybe we can even add a poll shaped like a thermometer with cold cheese at the bottom and cheese fusion at the top. I'd appreciate it so I don't have to wade through the inane opinions to get to what I really want; hilarious commentary like the following:

Also kudos to the additional Pylons guy, though I'm not sure what that would even mean in this context. Boobs = pylons?

You know that you are basically saying, "I don't want to hurt Randall's ego, put the criticism somewhere else," right? Please tell me that you were being sarcastic.

I was once explained to me that Romeo and Juliet was read in high school because kids did not have the life experience to read something more complex, like the scottish play or that one in denmark. I wonder if the same thing is going on here. For the 15-25 group, a speed run might not seem that funny. Any sex is interesting sex, and often speed is necessary. Also, this group has been inundated with endless supplies of widely available free sex videos. OTOH, anyone who has been out of college a couple years, as has the author of XKCD, has had time, to paraphrase Billy Joel, to sleep in your own space and wake up by yourself or not. Then the speed sex sometimes becomes, like the high school hair cut, something we laugh at not to cry. I though the comic was really funny because no matter how much we study, we still do geeky things because we simply do not know any better, that is until we get they physical experience.

Sex is the antithesis of Metroid; you get a better ending if it takes you longer. (Too much fanboyism?)

I'm surprised by the mixed reaction; half the people loved it, half the people hated it. It's like Google Chrome.

No, he just doesn't want to sift through the shit to find the gold, if you'll pardon my word choice.

I don't think Randall's ego self-confidence will be harmed much, if at all, by the negative reaction; "Haters gonna hate," as they say.

Still though, two threads per comic would be a bit excessive. Each comic thread is for discussion of the comic, which includes opinions of the comic AND additional humor. Separating those into two different threads would be weird and difficult; each one would have to be moderated for relevance (no opinions in the humor thread, no humor in the opinions thread), the humor thread might devolve into something akin to 4chan, the opinions thread might devolve into something akin to a YouTube comment board, etc. Plus, anyone who had an opinion and a joke would have to post in two different threads. It was a creative idea, and I almost feel bad shooting it down like this, but there's just too many issues.

Isn't there an option to create a poll?
If so, simply add a poll to the Comic threads, sounds simple enough to me =/

Also this was entertaining, however not one of the best recently, but that's just my opinion.

And finally I find that they "Hi Joee!" And "Hi Glasnt!" posts in the threads is rather entertaining, and when I first checked out the boards it made it seems like a smaller and friendly community.

Separate threads idea aside, I really do like the idea of a cheese thermometer to rate each comic. It would allow people to do easy searches for most or least popular comics (maybe have the five thumbnails at the bottom of the main page be auto-generated from the top five most popular comics?), and possibly give Randall some better-quantified feedback, too.

And it might save us lurkers from getting annoyed at the same ol' complaints being repeated again and again :P I agree that it would be cool to systematize the feedback so people can get it out of their system.

As for the additional pylons, it's always better to build two pylons for better coverage of the area, and the more the better. :j

This reminded me, few things are more hilarious than watching sped-up pornography (via VLC or another media player), muting the video's sound and replacing it with the benny hill theme (YouTube it or whatever). Don't believe me? try it, assuming you are of age to do so

So am I the only one that thought that "speed run" referred to his sexual performance and not the walkthrough? It seems like all the comments here are attaching the "speed run" to the walkthrough... but the other guy asked him how his date went, and he's answering that question. Plus, it makes the 'ouch' much more funny.

The speedrun is clearly the walkthrough, seeing as that is the entire premise of the comic. Otherwise the first panel is irrelevant.

The humor begins with the fact that this character is going to be uneducated about sex. You see, that will lead to awkwardness and if there is anything funnier than sex, it is awkward sex. So we know, simply because he says he'll need instructions, that he will have some hilarious troubles.

And then he can't even do that right! He gets the video wrong, and so he had even more awkward sex! I haven't laughed this hard since middle school when a teacher farted.

My goodness. How much lamer can you get than this comic? It's like a machine was told to look at all the previous xkcd comics and figure out how to make new ones, and it spit out "SEX PLUS VIDEO GAME. COMBINE THEM. THINK OF ONE IN TERMS OF THE OTHER." Does it matter that there couldn't even be a speedrun of sex? That it doesn't make sense as an idea?

I guess there will always be adults who are still amused by this sort of thing. Look: I have no problem with jokes about sex and stuff. It's just like reference-based humor: There's nothing wrong with making jokes that reference other works, and there's nothing wrong with making jokes about sex. The problem is when there is no real joke, and instead you are supposed to laugh merely because sex was brought up at all, and ha ha we are all still nervous about that.

That's really all this joke is: there's sort of a pun thing about video games and speed runs but it makes so little sense that i think we can all agree that the only reason anyone laughs at it is because: sex. and that is just lazy, when you get down to it.

Well I don't get it. They all have to do with sex? You do realize that xkcd has had almost 750 comics, right? Obviously several will have to do with sex. I thought all the comics you showed above were pretty different, to be honest.

I'm surprised no one has latched onto this yet, but my understanding is not that he realized it was a speed run through his performance, but rather, given the speedrun is revealed post date, that he was told by the date it was speed run. THAT'S the "ouch".

Let's just say one's first time isn't really analyzed that way by most men.
