Title-Text: "A universe that needed someone to observe it in order to collapse it into existence would be a pretty sorry universe indeed."

This could also be a reference to M.C. Escher's hands drawing. Both of them could be thinking of the other, only one could, or maybe neither is.

First Post... I've read this comic regularly since around 100, and this comic finally forced me to post.

Simply awesome. My favorite comic yet.

I see it as one of the characters is hoping the other is thinking of them.

This comic is insanely awesome.

My boyfriend create a mock-xkcd picture while we were courting, and it is pretty much this. Except they were both thinking of each other together.

I'm nearly tearing up now :(

Now, the real question is whether they are thinking of each other as specific individuals, or merely as someone who fulfills their need to be wanted.

i.e. "I'm dreaming about Mary."
vs. "I'm dreaming of someone who dreams about me."

Sometimes when Randall takes a concept he's done before and re-does it, it gets worse, and sometimes it gets better. Personally I'm putting today's very much in the "better" camp.

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

This is a distressingly insipid comic.

On the bright side, you've managed to surpass today's comic in cleverness. Unfortunately for today's strip--and, let's be honest here, for you as well-- you did so by using a retort most commonly heard on children's playgrounds.

You see? Bitchy is easy. Funny is hard.

Well, honestly, it's too late here for me to really get worked up about the xkcd comic or anyone else's views on it. But my post seemed like the appropriate witty retort to yours. The reply's the thing, as it were.

Anyway, as an off topic note, I find your avatar really amusing. What the heck IS that?

Okay, this scenario almost never happens in real life. I mean, you can be hopeful, but be at least a little realistic.

I find the text beautifully somber: A universe that needed someone to observe it in order to collapse it into existence would be a pretty sorry universe indeed.

That concept of collapsing into existence- that is, that by your pain from love unrequited, you may truly understand your life- is indeed a sorrowful one.

Fair enough; life's too short to fight over Internet cartoons. Sorry if I was unduly harsh.

As for the avatar, it's a Wooper head that I stuck on a drawing of Catullus, an ancient Roman poet.

For reference...

Image and...

...well, crap. Can't find the drawing. Maybe it wasn't Catullus. In any case, it's the only image editing I've done that I've ever loved... Excepting possibly a Dwarf Fortress CSI spoof.

I hate myself a little after reading this post. I'm actually a well-adjusted, sociable person! I swear!

This comic reminds me of the word "Mamihlapinatapai" of the Yaghan language, considered the "most succint word" by the Guinness Book of World Records. The word describes "a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that they both desire but which neither one wants to start."

I definitely went "d'aww." Then I noticed how unhappy they both look and mostly just felt bad.

And I do like this one quite a bit better than the similar boat one, mostly because of the sad look. Definitely adds something.

The simplicity makes this one extra interesting, simply because you can ascribe so many different scenarios that the characters may be thinking of. Of course with it being xkcd the obvious choice is of love, but with the different postures it could easily be about work, rape, sports, jumping into bodies of water (bomb v pin-drop), simply thinking about how different genders shave in the shower (guys shaving thinking about girls sitting to shave legs, who conversely are annoyed at guys being able to simply shave their face while standing up) the list goes on and on.

Randall has posted on the blog about some family problems he's going through. If this is the only thing that he can pull off, then maybe he should reduce his weekly schedule, or something? Usually Randall is at least trying to do something even remotely enjoyable; if I hadn't seen this comic on the xkcd main page, I would swear it's a very mean spirited parody, a mockery on Randall's most lazy, pathetic themes. And the "angsty" tone and nonexistant art just sends it way beyond rock bottom.

I like it - somewhat Escher-esque.

On a side note, maybe somwhere sitting on a tall wooden table, is a snowglobe that is our universe. There sits a man on a tall wooden stool beside said table whose sole purpose is to stare at the snowglobe and keep our universe in existence. One day, he will blink, and in that split-second our universe will end and cease to be.

Sorry, I don't get it. It's lovely, but how does the title-text relate to the picture?

So a universe doesn't need someone to observe it in order for it to exist.
And both of them imagine the other imagening them.
So overall that means, although they cannot observe if there is really someone imagening them, it is well possible?
