0875: "2009 Called"

Postby LucasBrown » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:00 am UTC

Alt text: "2017 called, but I couldn't understand what they were saying over all the screams."

Is that alt-text a Terminator reference? If not, what's it referring to? Just general chaos/disasters/etc that might be happening then?

Close, it's another Governator movie,The Running Man, takes place in 2017. That could be it.

That is a very nice comeback. I will have to try it.

Also, 3MW tees are still cool. Retro is cool, and old is retro, therefore, anything old is still ok, right guys? :(

Honestly, it's really 2009 that's being the asshole, using their transtemporal dialing technology to ask for a shirt back instead of averting 9/11, or the Indonesian typhoon, or any number of catastrophes in the last decade.

Not many people will use the word "asshole" when addressing a woman - it's one of the few places where English is strongly and overtly gendered. ("Bitch" is the feminine). Go RM, striking a blow for equality.

http://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Three-Wo ... B002HJ377A
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Wolf_Moon
i thought it might have something to do with that large moon outside (that i cant see becaus ei live inthe city and it's always cloudy). i know what a three dog night is.
The "Three Tux Moon" shirt features Tux the penguin associated with Linux [2] and was worn by Wil Wheaton at w00tstock Chicago 2010 [3] i missed chicago wootstock too, although i did catch wheaton at gencon.

I missed friday's comic, for once, the radiation chart one, except it turned up everywhere, slashdot, boingboing, instapundit, a few other places i no longer recall (reditt, digg)

I actually did this once, though far more fumbly and after they had already finished their comment. And they were saying that 1999 called, so I asked if he had warned them about 9/11 and the 2000 election.

You know 3MW is/was popular, because they had a college humour video based on it: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1924837

And it went meta-meta

Also, to retract my previous statement. My friend has 3MW. My boyfriend has a Three Keyboard Cat shirt.

December 22, 2012 called, and they say everything's OK.

December 20, 2012 called and they say some guy named "muntoo" (whoever that is) is going to destroy the world tomorrow, and all the superheros are too busy beating up Boba Fett to deal with him. They also say they're going to call tomorrow and tell us if everything's alright.

December 21, 2012 called, and it's this "muntoo" guy saying "Enjoy your planet while you still can.

I find it interesting that the last comic was called "Time Management", then this one showed up about an hour late.

Hmm? No, it showed up on time... the first post in this thread was 52 seconds after midnight, xkcd time. Are you getting confused somehow by Daylight Savings, maybe?

I liked this one a lot. I've actually had this strange fantasy where I travel back in time to the 1980s and had to convince everyone to avoid various mistakes and disasters. This was slightly before I heard about Hot Tub Time Machine. I imagine it would be quite stressful to try to remember as much as possible.

You'll probably find you've obsessed enough about your big mistakes to be explain how to avoid them with surprising accuracy.

Heh, I liked the T-shirt reference. It says, "old thing that used to be hip" pretty well even though I'd never heard of that particular one before.

Sort of a different take on the joke: 90s Phone Call

(1) That would be freaking awesome.
(2) The only problem is that it's either unpreventable (since WW1 was caused by the build-up of tension between nations and practically impossible to prevent unless you happen to be the only one in the world in possession of ICBM's), or you get a Red Alert situation where WW1 is averted only for tensions to build up to a more technologically advanced (and therefore destructive) world war, possibly set after the development of nuclear weapons (or causing said nukes to be developed by an undemocratic nation).

Just because 2009 called, doesn't mean communication went both ways. It could have been a delayed message. Or if this strip takes place on January 1st 2010, in a different timezone. (gotta remember that one). Maybe they hope the future will have been going to invent time portals, but have been going to be too busy changing the past for the better to care about a simple shirt, which they also wanted back.

Hey, the past just called, they want the future back.

And then Red Alert 3 occurs, and is terrible for all involved.

He's part jedi.

Also, telling them about the past would create a time paradox, meaning that as those disasters wouldn't have happened (or have been less memorable) the guy in the future wouldn't have warned the past about them.

Unless of course the guy in the past just did nothing about the warning.

For those visiting here from the future, "Haiti and Japan" is referring to the Great Mole-People Uprising of the 2010 decade.
Media of the day refers to these thwarted revolutions as massive "earthquakes".

And a note to all you Basically Decent moderns, you can't say "too soon" ... I'm talking to the future, give us a moment.

I've got a few questions since you're here, Future:

Did the Mole-People ever get their shovels back?
Are they treated fairly in the history eBooks (and do you still have eBooks)?
And most importantly, did they ever release 'Duke Nukem Forever'?

on the other side of the joke, 2009 didn't need to be warned about the japan earthquake.

There's a japanese TV series in that year that tells the story of earthquake in tokyo in the year 2012. talk about prophetic...
