He hasn't figured out that he's a tortoise. Turtles don't live to be 50 years old.

Reminds me of a great quote I read on amirite.net...
I like turtles because they're so chill. They don't hurt anyone. They're just like, "Hey man, I just want to swim, and maybe eat some lettuce. But I'm gonna take my time getting there; I'm not in a rush. Because I'm a turtle." amirite?

This is simplistically wonderful if you ask me, and very true. I think it would have been cool, though also probably would have got a lot of people upset not feeling like XKCD to them, if he had released this on Monday, and then did 4 more Tuesday-Friday where it's the same comic, but a different animal each time.

And I don't know if this is related to why he chose this comic, but tomorrow is Earth Day.

I like it, it reminds me of the old days where xkcd didn't make sense, nor try not to make sense.. a simpler time, when men were men and toilet paper were leaves.

Turtles do have it all figured out. When they bask in the sun, my turtles just stretch out their limbs and hang out. I have one who likes to "explore" my apartment, and when she encounters a human or cat, she pauses, extends her neck and raises her head, as to say "I am a turtle." YES, YES YOU ARE.

I'm probably reading too much into this one, but it makes me a little sad. I could easily see this comic as something that was inspired by those recent family events that Randall went through. A loved one and I had a similar discussion about dogs and how awesome it might be to not be self-aware (especially when you have an 'expiration date' looming over your head.) Ultimately we came to the conclusion that the ability to enjoy sex more than makes up for it.

But yeah the conversation kinda started the same way... "Dogs are lucky. They don't give a shit about cancer. They're just like 'Hey! What's this lumpy thing on me?' and then someone usually puts them down before they experience too much pain. All they know is that they're a dog and that's alright."

This post was a bit depressing... You should probably do an image search on pandas or something... Just in case.

hmmm... I thought it was some sort of (Tortoise)SVN reference... the values of backing up your data.... but then again, maybe not.

i think he just wanted to see if he could draw anything and have people analyse it in depth even though it HAS no depth.

EDIT: also to see if he would still get praise for doing absolutely nothing. he probably didnt even write this one.

Actually, some species of turtles can live for more than fifty years, including alligator snapping turtles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_snapping_turtle

i found out yesterday that the galapagos islands aren't anywhere near where i though they were, and that there was an anti-tortoise genocide there at one time.
the comic made plenty of sense to me. but then i'm drunk.

I dunno turtles have it pretty rough. You have to live in a sewer. There are all these guys in purple pajamas try to kill you led by a crazy man covered in blades. The only thing you can ever eat is pizza delivery due to living in said sewer. I think being a turtle is probably tougher than it sounds, it sounded like a good idea when I was younger but now I'm not so sure. I guess the TV, movie and toy royalties would be nice, but I think turtles got screwed on the contract or something you'd think they could probably rent an apartment or something. It ain't easy being green.

For what it's worth, my father was a Turtle. And yes, he was a pilot in WWII, and yes, I'm probably older than you. He had an ID card and everything.

Donnie: Why should we care?
Karen Pommeroy: Because the rabbits are us, Donnie.
Donnie: Why should I mourn for a rabbit like he was human?
Karen Pommeroy: Are you saying that the death of one species is less tragic than another?
Donnie: Of course. The rabbit's not like us. It has no... keen look at something in the mirror, it has no history books, no photographs, no knowledge of sorrow or regret... I mean, I'm sorry, Miss Pommeroy, don't get me wrong; y'know, I like rabbits and all. They're cute and they're horny. And if you're cute and you're horny, then you're probably happy, in that you don't know who you are and why you're even alive. And you just wanna' have sex, as many times as possible, before you die... I mean, I just don't see the point in crying over a dead rabbit! Y'know, who... who never even feared death to begin with.

I'm not sure whether to say "Hi, I'm Randy! I'm a bandicoot!" or "Twenty-three years ago I fed these identical ducks with these identical sandwiches." "Ten years ago, I too fed them to bursting-point." "And ten and twenty years hence the same ducks and the same undergraduates will share the same ritual feast, and the ducks will bite the undergraduates’ fingers as they have just bitten mine. How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks..."
