A: STR and CON are short for strength and constitution - common RPG (more specifically D&D) traits that a character has to determine how strong and resolute they are, respectively.

B: Have you seen nike plus? It's essentially what this is - particularly running. People track their miles online and compete against others and themselves on various meaningless but fun statistics (like a video game!) http://www.nike.com/nikeplus/

Loving the comic, as usual.

 that was unbelievably funny.

I prefer more modern RPGs then DnD type stuff though.

Ah, well I got that STR = strength, but cos I didn't know what CON meant, I wasn't sure about STR either.

I seriously wish this were true... I'd honestly be a lot more motivated to exercise if there were an RPG-like rewards system built in, at least one that was more immediate and obvious than "you'll feel vaguely better overall a year from now". Stats would have to decay with time, though, like PvP ranks in World of Warcraft. And assuming we don't have implanted exercise meters or something, even if players are honest about reporting their stats it'd still be tricky to design a system that would discourage metagaming, rather than just grinding levels. That's the worst part of any RPG, after all. If anyone figured out how to make this work I'd love to hear it.

(Now if only there was an exercise to bump CHA, we'd be all set.)

I'd hate dying and losing exp, it would suck.

I was on WoW for a Year and I loved it, played it non-stop :D. Best MMORPG ever :P

It would be even better if all attributes were equally easy to raise. Like, strength is easy as hell to raise, but raising constitution takes much more of an investment to get a comparable result.

The problem is the lack of ding. You never get to know when your stats actually go up, so it feels like they never do.

LUK (Luck) starts off shitty and it's hard to level but once it's at max you can do anything!

Of course xkcd well knows that having this webcomic constantly trains CHA... which makes this comic less of a joke and more real life.
Unless there is a distinction between CHAinternet and CHA

I would exercise a hell of a lot more if I got a spell that could destroy a city block each level. Too bad I picked Bard as my class when I was born.

I guess nobody knows of any website/app that encourages people (geeks that is) to do more exercising by using RPG terms?
Like, you enter how many miles you ran today and it adds exp to your stats, etc.
(Nevermind the obvious vulnerability to faking your stats)

I would be willing to code something like that myself (and thus neglecting exercise - oh the irony) but I'm not really into RPGs from a math point and therefore my balancing would suck ;)

The opposite is true for me.

I'm guessing your character is a brute or an oaf. My character is a dunce and he's got tons of constitution but can't raise a strength point to save his life.

I got interested in excercize once I realized I could do 10 pullups and bench 125lbs. Working out is so much more fun when you progress quickly; especially for a scrawny guy like me.

I put all my stats into DEX and INT.

Actually, the 'leveling up' connection works for studying as well. In fact... I printed out my degree's courses and arranged them by prequisite in a sort of "skill tree." Continuious Time Signals, requires L3 Circuit Analysis and L4 Calculus. What... it was easier to understand that way >.>

Fuck you for not even reading my above post about nike+.

(It doesn't use a direct translation of RPG stats, but its pretty close to what you were talking about. It uses an ipod add-on to monitor your running patterns.)

World of Warcraft taught me the value of incremental improvements.

Before WoW:

Day 1: 20 push-ups
(exercise, exercise, exercise)
Day 12: 22 push-ups

"Screw this! 2 push-ups for two weeks' work? Forget it!"

After WoW:

Day 1: 20 push-ups
(exercise, exercise, exercise)
Day 12: 22 push-ups

"Sweet! A 10% inherent bonus before gear modifiers, all for grinding just four and a half hours? This gym membership is imba!"

Strength and Constitution, by the way, definitely have a spillover effect into Charisma.
I will not succumb to evil, unless she's cute.

Wow serious? I must need less exp. For me it was like:

5 push ups a day ---week---> 10 push ups a day. But now I'm just too lazy to do any.

A long time ago my character did 20 pushups ---3 months---> 50 pushups.

And I can tell you, for sure, there was no charisma spillover.

Hehe, this also works with skills.

Cooking Skill -3

pull ups- 0

Bike tire changing - 1 (I did this a couple nights ago, 2 tires- one successful, the other failed. Of course I felt the skill up thing even though I did not hear it.)

Btw, I use a CHR Trainer, lol.(Drama Class)

I need a AGL trainer or work on myself, because anyone could throw the slowest punch ever and I'll wont be able to dodge the hit. Although I have a kick arse Con, I'm a natural tank.(I know what you would think but in real life, no one wants to get punched >.>)
