0964: "Dorm Poster"

Alt text: "I was going to record an album with that cover under the name "PINK FTFY", so it'd come after them on the store CD rack. But at this point music stores are just rooms where CDs are set out to age before they're thrown away, so probably nobody would see it."

The compact disc really did have a pretty short run, didn't it? I remember buying my first CD, when I was in junior high. I don't remember the last one I bought, it was a while back...

I've bought several physical compact disks in recent months, some even from actual physical stores!

As for the poster I think that's a funny idea though I was ignorant that the first one actually exists.

Wouldn't Pink Floyda be the name right after it alphabetically?

Coincidentally I had bought a CD this week. Although only because it was $4 versus iTunes' lossy $14. And I didn't buy it from a brick and mortar store. In fact, it probably came from one of those stores that went under.

Not so! Sometimes people do still actually buy CDs!

Objection! I do buy CDs, and do so in stores.
And chances are that I would buy this CD only for the cover ;)

Interestingly enough, this is actually what is on the back cover of some versions of the album, though without the lens. From the Pink Floyd Archives

"Fixed that for you"?

I don't see anything wrong with physics in the original poster. It would have been funny if the original poster had some physics mistake and the second fixed it, but I don't think this is the case...

My theory is that the music industry killed music stores when they silently dropped the "Compact Disc; Digital Audio" Logo signalling conformance to the Red Book Audio Standard.

If CDs are no longer trustworthy, why risk buying them?

Edit: That is also why vinyl is making a comeback: It won't tamper with your equipment.

Can it really be coherent if it has this wide spectrum it's being diffracted out into? (Damnit, I hate picky people)

There is spatial coherence and temporal coherence. Most lasers exhibit both to a high degree, but the light beam in the image is at the very least highly spatially coherent, since it's a nice tight pencil beam. It has the full spectrum, so it obviously isn't temporally coherent.

I think Pfhorrest was thinking more along the lines of homogeneous than coherent anyway, but he wasn't really wrong.

Having a physical CD is absolute evidence that you have purchased the music, and can actually be cheaper than buying on iTunes or similar. On the other hand, I have this album in my attic on vinyl. That's the 1973 release.

I would have this album on vinyl, having inherited all vinylla from my dad, but my hipster twat brother stole it for his own bachelor pad. HE DOESN'T EVEN OWN A RECORD PLAYER.

And mine is broken, but that's not the point.

Nice one. Of course, one of the charms of their early music was that they were f... up beyond fixing.

@Felstaff's fixed "Wall" cover: Genius. I thought it was the Momentary Lapse of Reason cover through the window for a second as well.

I think there's a mistake in the second poster.

After the lens, the seperated beam is now converging, with purple at the bottom. The second prism bends all the light upwards, but same as the first prism bends purple light more (unless made of some exotic material that doesn't behave optically like glass). This means that the purple light would end up travelling up lots, and the red light would end up travelling up much less. The second prism would actually diverge the light more, but angle the centre of the beam upwards.

What is needed is the second prism to be base down so it sends the light downwards and puts it back to collimated white light.
Or you need to have two lenses, one to focus the light the other placed after the focus when the light is swapped over (red and purple) to make it slightly converging again. Then you can put the prism that way up and have it re-collimate the white light.

Hey all, noob posting here (have read comic for about 7 years but finally called to post!)

Lode, if you have a look at http://www.amiright.com/album-covers/images/album-Pink-Floyd-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon.jpg (sorry, don't know how to link images) you'll see there's no indigo and violet, only one band of purplish light. I haven't looked for the quote but he was reported to say that for art's sake he'd compromise on science [not to mention the fact there'd be a continuous spectrum rather than blocks of coloured light on the cover].

So anyway, at least 2 physics mistakes on the poster - a non-continuous spectrum and the loss of the indigo/violet bands in favour of artistic simplicity.

Was that worth registering for?

Yes. It fails the "all light paths are reversible" test. Oh well, it wouldn't be the first time this mistake's been made.

This is pretty up there in my favourite album covers (or just albums) ever. It's instantly recognisable, but simple.
Made me think of this.

Newton had it right, to recombine the spectrum the second prism needs to be the same way up as the first.

I think that the reason the rainbow has seven colours is due to the mystical properties of the number seven, indigo and violet aren't different enough to deserve two places.

Actually I use the Pink Floyd album cover in my physics class to teach about dispersion (separation of light). The original album cover DOES have a "mistake" in that the colors should separate in the prism, but it is art not science.

I'll have to use the new album cover and comic in my lecture from now on! Thanks everyone.
