Title Text: "Anyone who says that they're great at communicating but 'people are bad at listening' is confused about how communication works."

Agreed. It's so hard to communicate Super Mario Bros. walkthroughs to noobs.

This too made me think of Mario.

This is why I hate people who don't synthesize and respond when you say things to them. They are not giving you any notion of if what you said is painting a picture in their head of what you meant to communicate at all.

I find it kinda funny that you made this comic right after all of the word filters were implemented

Pure and utter coincidence, my friend.

It took me a few goes to figure out what the hell was going on... which seems fitting, given the topic. My reading:
Spoiler:
Panel 1: White-hat guy sees a dangerous hole in the road.
Panels 2-3: WHG tries to tell hair-guy about the hole, but all hair-guy hears is "WHG seems worried about something".
Panels 4: WHG gives up, hair-guy doesn't understand.
Panel 5: WHG rants to hair-girl about hair-guy not understanding, meanwhile hair-girl tells WHG about a hole in the ground.
Panel 6: They part ways, WHG thinks that hair-girl is going to tell hair-guy about the hole too.
Panels 7-11: Hair-girl meets hair-guy, they share stories about WHG, wander off, and fall into the hole WHG tried (and failed) to warn them about.
Panels 11-12: WHG also falls into a different hole, that hair-girl tried to warn him about (which he ignored, thinking they were talking about the same hole).

Meanwhile:
Panels 13-18: Beret guy sees a hole in the road, and goes to find bald guy. Rather than try to tell him about the hole, he drags him over and shows him the hole. They both walk away understanding that the hole is there.

This got me thinking that the best way to tell someone something is to show them, generally speaking though.

Yeah, I assumed so, but the timing is still pretty good

Explaining things properly is extremely difficult. You have to align your brain with what the opponent is thinking and explain concepts based on what they already know or how they like to tackle new ideas.

For those of you who read Mark Rosewater, this reminds me of his "Elegance" column from some years ago - illustrating a concept by showing how not to do it.

WHG "watch out for the hole."
Hair guy "are you refering to my existentialist crisis"
WHG "Sigh"
hair guy "girllookatthatbody"
WHG "forget it, walk forward 20' with your eyes closed, it is all good"
Hair Guy "ok"
WHG meets Girl (is that megan?)
WHG "Hair guy is a douche"
Megan "Yeah, I'd hate to be stuck in a hole with him, speaking of which, watch out for that hole"
WHG "yeah, I know, how'd you, never mind"
etc.

I may be a very critical person. I might be a misanthrope, I judge, I often spew venom. C'est la vie.

But this comic.

Is brilliant. (please pronounce that period!)

Anyway, I enjoy this comic if only for the timing.

I think he meant "that" but why is a mystery.

Loaf crumbs?

I think they mean all the miss-communication

I find it interesting that the message the comic is trying to convey is actually better communicated in text than in pictorial form.

I forgot Mod Madness breaks links. The word "Witchcraft" in that link needs to be replaced with the one word name of the CCG put out by Wizards of the Coast. There is no way to make it clickable. :D

I think it's funny that his comic is almost impossible to explain to someone without showing them. or is that the point?

I think the alt text on this comic was easily the most ironic I've ever seen, because I have NO idea what the comic was trying to communicate. Does that make me a poor listener?

Reading phlip's spoiler makes it much clearer, but I think Adacore really hit the nail on the hed*.

*I had to misspell it because the forum is intentionally screwing up our communications. That's pretty clever.

So this comic is showing, not telling, the idea of "show not tell"?

Actual human beings can use language, though, so we can say things like "watch out, there's a hole in the ground over there" instead of using ambiguous pictoral speech bubbles. Broken aesop?

And now one must contemplate the further nuance of this comic's effectiveness at conveying the message to us.

I had to concentrate a bit.

but people are fuckin’ retards.

I can prove it too.
Unfortunately, that also guarantees
that they will never get it.

It is refreshing with a strip once in a while that you actually have to sit down and read instead of just skimming. Makes the humor last longer.

At least it doesn’t try to replace assassinate by “buttbuttinate”. ;)

Yeah, when I first saw that my post apparently said "hit the nail on the neck" I laughed at the irony of me complaining about the comic failing to communicate to me, only to me apparently fail to communicate in my own post. Thankfully, it wasn't actually my fault.

This confused me because hair-guy seems to lose his hair in panel 9... I c.a.n not work out if it's still supposed to be the same guy or if the girl moves on and talks to bald-guy between panels.

edit: for some reason, "c.a.n" is being changed to "will" and "c.a.n't" to "won't" every time I post, that's annoying. "c.a.n" c.a.n not always be replaced with will!!

"Anyone who says that they're great at communicating but 'people are bad at listening' is confused about how communication works."

Well, i think its more like "I am great at explaining, people are just bad at listening"

Because whoever of you tried to explain your parents how something PC related works knows what I am talking about.
Spoiler:
I say:
Me(over phone): "First do A, then do B and finally C to get the desired results"
*an hour later*
Parent: "I can't do it, i did it like you explained but it doesn't work"
Me: "Okay, from the beginning, click A"
Parent: "What's A?"
Me: "....okay, A is that big red button that says >A<"
Parent: "Ah, i get it now"
*several hours later*
Parent: "It still doesn't work, maybe i should call the hotline"
Me: "You don't have to do that, they will tell you exactly what i am doing."
Me: "Okay, so you did A, right?"
Parent: "Right."
Me: "And then B, right?"
Parent: "Right."
Me: "And then C?"
Parent: "Right."
Parent: "Wait a minute..." "I was suppose to do ABC? i did ACB."
WHY?!!!
And believe me, this kind of stuff happens every single freaking time.
