1056: "Felidae"

Postby m_dow » Wed May 16, 2012 4:07 am UTC

Image

Alt text: 'Smilodon fatalis' narrowly edged out 'Tyrannosaurus rex' to win this year's Most Badass Latin Names competition, after edging out 'Dracorex hogwartsia' and 'Stygimoloch spinifer' (meaning 'horned dragon from the river of death') in the semifinals.

I predicted years ago that "Sabertooth" was the inevitable end of that name progression.

I guess 'Cougar' is no longer an option thanks to its more recent slang meaning, but it can't just be me who thinks the word 'ocelot' is awesome. Also ocelots are awesome. :D

Aw, man, missed the chance

And I personally would not be against the idea of an OS X Ocelot.

Argh. Too slow on my first opportunity for the first post!

Am I the only one who thinks that "mountain lion" is pretty lame in comparison to ALL of "panther", "puma", and "cougar"?

So OSX runs out of cats before Ubuntu runs out of letters then, eh? Of course, Microsoft have an infinite list of stupid numbers they can use - not like a frequent release schedule is their problem or anything.

Actually, Ubuntu already used "ocelot"... and "lynx"

What about Smilodon Fatalis? That's a pretty cool name right there.

I am in staunch disagreement with this comic.

I also know nothing about Macs. Ergo it's lost on me except for cat names.

You are not. I think panther wins this game as coolest name of well-known cats. Funnily enough, back before OS X rolled around, my college used to name all of its servers with cat names, including the less-well-known serval. Don't know if they still do...

Well, there's one problem Android will never have. We all laughed at their decision to name their versions after desserts. Who's laughing now?

Oh you can run out of desserts. Especially if they iterate three or four times a year like they seem to be.

I also want to know how on earth "Mountain Lion" ranks as a cooler name than "Puma," or how "Ocelot" is a less cool name than "Cheetah."

(and, Omegaton, you're not the only one. Latin teacher here...)

Oh, Linux. You might not have the biggest market share, but you do own the market on ridiculous names.

I once had a mountain bike whose model name was "Ocelot".

It was a reasonable bike, but the name did not hold a lot of street cred. As noted in the comic, it is only a small step up from "Domestic Short Hair".

I'm not sure why, but I always associate "ocelot" and "axolotl". Perhaps Apple needs to start naming their OS releases after amphibians.

So I didn't know this until a few weeks ago when my 2nd grader did a report on snow leopards...but they are much smaller than other leopards, and only weigh 35-55 pounds. I'm thinking that might screw up the graph a bit. Because it's pretty unlikely a snow leopard could beat a cougar in a fight. Even a good-sized bobcat could give a smallish snow leopard a run for its money. A cougar could mop the floor with one.

I think they will use Ocelot, Cougar and Lynx before they abandon the cats. Possibly Bobcat and Wildcat.

Unfortunately, for me the obvious pivot out of big cats would be "Kodiak" but they already used that one.

What do you think they're going to say? "Buy this, it's not quite as good as that, but it's alright"?

Tiger needs to be on the far left, with lion just right of it.

Maybe they could move to changing the roman numeral: first is Mac OS XI. Then Mac OS XII -- X11 for short.

I'm currently working on a review and quantitative analysis of the effects of body size and sociality in structuring within-Carnivora killing on and by the world's felid species, so this is basically the ultimate in 'get out of my head, Randall.'

No, "Polecat" goes with "cougars." [No, not attractive milfs. Overweight, soused cougars on poles. Yikes!]

What about the Cheshire Cat? Don't trust that smile! Randall omitted lots of other cats, including hep cats, atapults and the most dangerous, astrophes.

I personally like catamount out of all the various names for cougar (I think there's roughly forty different names). I guess you could also use Painter, but that's probably too obscure. I hadn't heard that one until I moved into the southern US.
