Sciency, but 264 is the average gestation period. People can be pregnant for slightly longer or somewhat premature. Pregnancy doesn't usually occur immediately after coitus, it can occur a week afterwards; sperm have a longer shelf life than produce, amirite? No? *walks off stage*.

But anyway, Bill Murray fucked us into existence...

Disregard that, I'm perfectly willing to accept this as fact.

So it is written.

The loop ended when he was a nicer person.

(I may not have seen the movie this millennium, and thus got the G-rated moral)

Actually, after an hour or so it starts to just hurt, and not in a good way. Jokes have to make sense after actually being analyzed. Heh, analyzed. Or not. Depends on your humor. You are definitely wrong, possibly right. Jokes might be both funny and not funny, but only after saying them do they become one or the other.

Something sounded fishy. 264 days / 7 days = 37 weeks. Pregnancy lasts 40 weeks. So you're saying the earth was born premature? Probably expains a lot.

There's an alternative interpretation of what happened - at the end of each cycle of the day, there *was* a version of him that went forward, as well as one that got sent back to the start of a new version of the day. In fact, we only followed one that got out of the cycle at a good point - there was a part of him that just kept going.

But they didn't have sex... at least not that night.

Rita: [as Phil kisses Rita over and over discovering that he has finally passed Groundhog Day] Phil, why weren't you like this last night? You just fell asleep.
Phil: It was the end of a VERY long day.

As Stephen Tobolowsky (Ned Ryerson) explains:

It's a scene that almost didn't get shot. Bill (Murray) refused to shoot this all-important scene. Harold Ramis and Andy McDowell were exasperated. They wanted to get on with it. Bill said, "Absolutely not." He wasn't shooting the scene unless he knew what he was wearing. Harold Ramis said, "What do you mean?" Bill said, "Am I wearing all of my clothes? Am I naked? Am I wearing pajamas? Is my shirt unbuttoned? Did we do it?"

Harold was surprised. This was actually a pretty good question. Did they do it? Harold asked Bill what he thought and Bill said, "Hey, I'm asking you." Amazingly, Harold said, "Let's take a vote." He polled the entire crew working on the movie and it was a tie. It came down to a girl who was an assistant set director. It was her first movie but she was unintimidated. She said, "He is dressed in the clothes he wore the night before, all of them, absolutely. If you do it any other way you will ruin the movie."

Harold Ramis smiled and said to Bill, You're dressed in all your clothes. Absolutely. If you do it any other way it's going to ruin the movie." Bill nodded and that's the way they shot it.

40 weeks is counted from the start of the woman's last period, not from the moment of conception. Since ovulation typically occurs about halfway through the menstrual cycle, the average woman is pregnant 37-38 weeks.

There is an English translation of Usher's Annals of the World in my house somewhere.

Also, it's time for someone to badly photoshop Groundhog Day and start a 'Today is Groundhog Day' hoaxon facebook. :x

So I had my first 'get out of my head Randall' moment.

See, I was explaining to a friend yesterday that 'The Groundhog's Day Loop' did not break by Bill Murry finally getting to sleep with the girl.

That would just be sleazy.

No, it broke the night before when it started to snow. For 17 years of Groundhog's Days Bill had been living in the snow but it never actually snowed, which is why he is surprised by it in the movie.
The point is not that he got the girl, the point is that he grew as a person and stopped being the selfish douchebag he was. He learned to enjoy French, he learned to enjoy making music, and (most important) he learned to enjoy making others happy. That was the trigger that allowed him to free himself from the loop and when it finally happened the world he had been living in opened up and the snow fell.
Getting laid was just gravy.

(But after reading the above comments it seems he had to wait till the next day to get it on)

Not everything which maps countable infinities onto finite areas is a Lovecraft reference.

BTW, it's one of my most favorite movies. (It's also one that I almost always miss the beginning off when it's on the TV (I haven't been able to find it on dvd yet (and I've stopped buying anything from the MPAA alltogether, so it's doubtful I'll ever will)), accidentally it's the same with me with Scrooged (another great Bill Murray film about a holiday), I always miss the first 10-15 minutes of that movie too.)

Not necessarily true! Depends on the people involved. Possibly also on how much lube they're using, and what kind.

Moreover, in this case Phil and Rita's bodies can be assumed to reset every 24 hours. They'll be fine.

If anyone is going to be the great cosmic father of us all, I'm glad it's Bill Murray.

This comic reminded of Jules trying to poke holes into its logic while watching it with her friends in ep 3x14 of Cougar Town where she goes like this:

Okay, Bill Murray is a mean weatherman. He wakes up. It's the same day.
I get it, but how come the other people don't realize they're trapped in the same day, too?

Because they're not trapped. They're just there.

When the same thing keeps happening over and over again... What do they think?

No, they don't think.

So they're, like, robots?

That is such a crappy hotel. Why doesn't he just check into a new place?

Because he can't change the day before it starts. He can only change it after it starts.

Do you hear yourself?

So if Bill Murray can do anything, how come he can't save the old homeless guy from dying?

Because some things you can't change.

Well, he saved the little kid in the tree.

Because some things you can change.

You can save children, but you can't save old homeless people?

Forget that he can learn to play the piano but he can't remember where the puddle is. Why does the day finally end?

This is one of those comics that make no sense at all unless you're from North America. First, I had to look up 'Groundhog Day' on wikipedia. Now I still don't know what that has to do with having sex, being trapped in a time loop and creating our world. Anybody willing to give insight?
