Saudi Arabia executes Shiite Cleric; inflames Middle East

Postby KnightExemplar » Mon Jan 04, 2016 6:26 pm UTC

Saudi Arabia breaks diplomatic ties with Iran as crisis intensifies (Washington Post)

Long story short, Saudi Arabia (mostly Sunni) carried out an execution of 47 Shiites, including a well-respected and outspoken cleric: Sheik Nimr Baqr al-Nimr. Iranians (mostly Shiites) responded by attacking the Saudi Arabian embassy in Iran's capital Tehran. Saudi Arabia responds to THAT by cutting all diplomatic ties with Iran.

The shitstorm seems to be reverberating across the Muslim world, with various countries either taking a stand with Saudi Arabia: UAE, Bahrain, and Sudan have also cut ties with Iran at this point.

"May you live in interesting times," and in this case places. In truth there is no excitement going on within earshot.

From what I've been hearing on NPR, most of the 'excitement' per-se is largely diplomatic (other than the attack on Saudi diplomats in Iran). Closing of embassies and statements of "downgraded international relationships".
We're in the traffic-chopper over the XKCD boards where there's been a thread-derailment. A Liquified Godwin spill has evacuated threads in a fourty-post radius of the accident, Lolcats and TVTropes have broken free of their containers. It is believed that the Point has perished.
