Washington Post Article: Fair Use violation of xkcd?

Postby Army Fencer » Fri Jan 20, 2017 2:02 am UTC

I've lurked on this forum for awhile, but a Washington Post article got me to join.

In a recent article about the transition at the White House, the graphic designers used images and font that look a lot like Randall Munroe's work. It's a bit more obvious in the desktop version, but it's clear that the Washington Post is using xkcd style to relay information in graphic way that suggests the detail oriented geeky whimsy that xkcd is known for. I'm considering writing to the ombudsman, but I think Mr. Munroe should know about it, too.

The article is below.

You can't copyright a style, and he didn't invent stick figures.
Honesty replaced by greed, they gave us the reason to fight and bleed
They try to torch our faith and hope, spit at our presence and detest our goals

And remember, there's that proverb (or is it an adage?) about imitation and flattery.

You mean this? Image Randall doesn't own stick figures, and as stick figures go these are very different to his style. They have feet, for starters.

Also, Randall gives cats and dogs full bodies.
