A Japanese space probe arrived at an asteroid Wednesday after a 3 1/2-year journey to undertake a first-ever experiment: blow a crater in the rocky surface to collect samples and bring them back to Earth.

Hayabusa2 will send out a squat cylinder that will detonate above the asteroid, shooting a 2-kilogram (4.4-pound) copper projectile into it at high speed to make a crater.

Sounds like a preemptive strike to me.

(Remembered this sitting in "Unanswered Topics" for the longest time, without seeing any response or having a useful one of my own. Took a day to figure out where the thread was after it was no longer in that list.)

Hayabusa-2: Japan's rovers send pictures from asteroid, - BBC article, but surely there's some good Sciency Site links out there for anyone wanting to know more.

(There are, I've been looking around, but I reckon you can find them yourselves fairly well, now I've bumped the topic. Twitter-feeds and wiki page and everything else.)
