Sean Tevis: "XKCD homage style" comic in campaign

Postby ellecee » Wed Jul 16, 2008 8:43 pm UTC

Sean Tevis is running for a Kansas State Representative spot and is using a comic titled "Running for Office: It's Like A Flamewar with a Forum Troll, but with an Eventual Winner" to drum up support.

http://seantevis.com/kansas/3000/running-for-office-xkcd-style/

I for one like both his politics and his moxie. What do you guys think?

Edit: I just wanted to add that I posted this because I thought it was amusing, not campaign on his behalf.

I'm considering it.

I just wish I had $500 so I could get a DVD of Sean Tevis' Mom telling me how awesome I am.

Yes that was seriously tempting but alas I could only give $25. Still, every drop in the bucket...

It's interesting. Something to keep an eye on, certainly. I'd like to know a bit more about his specific positions, but I'm certainly inclined to donate.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. It's too bad his main page is apparently down.

Ah, well that explains it.

And I'm a member of the 3000.

It would be nice to know more beyond "I want to get rid of the sales tax on food," "I want govt. to be more open," and "My opponent is an old, ugly Republican" but I suppose the second's enough for a tiny donation.

Ugh, why couldn't he be running just one state over where I could consider donating to him an investment on my debt. I'd like to send money but I'm already way to damn in the hole. My bank account is almost zero thanks to college.

Also, I really wish he'd have a youtube video of himself for the perks acting like the guys from PBS. Plus, I'm holding out for a totebag.

I actually seriously considered donating, but you have to be a US-citizen.
Although if I were voting, I would look a lot more deeply into his policies, I would totally donate a little to help give him a chance based purely on that page.

Apparently his policies include putting government stuff on the internet. Really, that alone is pretty awesome (the fact that he's probably not in favor of creationist propaganda in schools is nice, too).

I wish he were running in Texas.

You do? Ah well... I'd planned on looking into this in more detail when I got home from work, and then probably donating...

I guess I'll have to do just the first half of that. Pity.

I think you've nailed it with the Totebag idea. I donated to my NPR station last time around just so I could get a "Nina Totenbag", named after Supreme Court journalist/correspondent Nina Totenberg. I love the YouTube idea, too... maybe next election cycle. :D

Now you've pretty much cornered yourself into incorporating a Ninja into the totebag design somehow, you realize that right?

Oh and congrats on beating the record for the most donors by more than double.

Another non-USian who can't do much but comment here on the pleasure of seeing someone do something truly original*, whose values appear** to be something I'd support.

*yes, yes, I know, it's not an original comic style, but an internet comic as a campaign ad? Come on, that counts right!?

** I have the luxury of taking the strip at face value without having to do further reading on his policies since it doesn't impact me politically. Man I love the internet (boom de yada...)

It's a bit of a nuisance that I'm a non-US citizen as I would gladly pay this guy my £4.17. Heck his "The 3000" frame more than convinces me to make a donation. However, I do wish the Kansasians the best of luck in securing this apparently awesome state representative bloke. Although, he should be wary he doesn't turn into another the Ronpaul.
Perhaps he'll use NGGYU as his campaign theme tune, in a similar vein to when New Labour used "Things, can only get better!" in '97

That was the problem i had with it. It reminded me of Homer at the U2 concert when he was running for Sanitation Commissioner.

Just another stepping stone in Randall's plan for world domination.

Alas, I too am not an American. And in general not very interested in American politics, nor politics in general for that matter. But this is pure win, and I wish I could donate some campaign money.

I especially love how this is not just some bad ripoff of XKCD, it's a homage to it, it has good humor, and it actually points out that it's not meant to rip off XKCD or pretend to be its own style.

I hope you get elected, Sean. Maybe all hope is not lost for politics after all.

I love the comic, and from what I have seen he looks like an awesome candidate (albeit I haven't seen much)

HOWEVER

I am VERY MUCH BOTHERED that anyone who is presumably a fan of xkcd would reverse the axes on a graph. Failure/success is the dependent variable, pleasantries is the independent variable.

On the other hand, the fact that I hold him to higher standards than most people in such things exemplifies that I consider him the kind of person who could/should know such things, which isn't common for a politician.

Is there any way us non-USians could get round this and make a donation.

Eg. Sending someone trustworthy on the Fora a "gift" amount of money on paypal - then they collect it together and donate it as their own donation (since it would be their money as its a gift).

We wouldn't get a mug or anything cool but we'd be helping. Plus for many of us we'd be making a double donation with the exchange rate as it is.

Rather than one kind of illegal, this is two kinds of illegal. It's better to not try to circumvent election funding laws (as silly as they may be).

He could be faking in-group camaraderie or he could just not be very funny.

It makes me wonder though about the internet and people "from" the internet influencing the real world. The internet as a system or tool is widely accepted and culturally assimilated, but seeing a politician's fundraising PR based on internet culture (I guess that's a good enough term,) is a little strange.

What d'you suppose will happen between "mainstream" and "internet" culture in the future?

I think this is truly a very great idea. If I was an American Citizen, I would so give him the money. (Verbal RickRoll ftw) because It does no good to him only to say: Uhm, I like this campaign. To do something is the only alternative gthat matters. Period.

I gave money-- a funny guy whose politics I can identify with... but I also think this should be in a forum section with higher viewership!
