Alright, Stephen Colbert just told his Nation to write-in the name Colbert (unsurprisingly). So looks like you've got a challenge on your hands.

Yeah but serenity has the strong advantage of being a legitimate choice - whereas those would have to be lucky to even beat Colbert or Xenu.

I'm not sure which one would be worse...Xenu or Colbert... OTOH: why don't we call it 'Jayne'?

And surprise, surprise, it is now the first on the list of suggestions.

I love that even if Colbert wins, odds are NASA will just enact their "We're just taking this into consideration, but we're going to name it X instead" clause.

Haven't you people heard? It's going to be called "Colbert", after the greatest living American.

As Stephen said, "Serenity? Earthrise? Those aren't spaceships, they're herbal teas!"

I'm not sure this post helps you in any way. On one hand, you are honest and reasonable, but you also admit you are stupid. On the other hand, you are abusing punctuation by ending a sentence that is not a question in a question mark, which makes you look stupid.

He is writing in informal English. People often use question marks to denote confusion. That seems to be the use here. Moreover, poor grammar isn't a sign by itself of stupidity. There's a correlation certainly but it isn't very strong.

Forgive me for sounding noobish by asking but... why is Serenity such a popular name? I voted for it, but only because one of my friends IM'd me a link and told me to vote for that name, so I did. I asked him about the name but he didn't reply.

I doubt that's the only reason - that may be the reason for your friends telling you to vote for it, but I suspect part of the reason it's winning by such a large margin is because the other names actually suck.

EDIT: stupid typo

That's what I meant by popular. All my friends like it. And yeah, I agree that the other names kinda suck.

I wouldn't be too worried. NASA "reserves the right to choose an acceptable name," regardless of how the voting turned out.

I actually lost all interest in the voting when I read that clause of the rules. I somewhat feel bad for all the Colbert fans who spammed the site thinking they were totally going to win, when in fact none of them probably even looked at the rules.

"We're going to let you vote so you think you have a say in the process, when really at the end of the day we're going to pick whichever name suits NASA best."

I'm reasonably sure that they'll just end up naming the thing Serenity, since that was the "approved" name that won (by a huge margin over the other approved names).

Colbert said on the Today Show that NASA told him they'd name it Colbert if he won. Their incentive is good PR. Mass appeal. A sense of humor. Reaching out to we young people. (I had no idea anyone thought Serenity was cool.)

UnAmericans need to use an IP address shield to view:

I don't get it. Why only allow IP addresses from inside the USA? That's just an incentive for me to never visit hulu.com again.

Apemeat wrote:Wow. I'm actually pissed at Colbert for once.

Yeah, me too. Not only would Serenity have been way cooler, it also would have been more appropriate and it fits better with the names of the existing modules. Usually when he does something like this i think it's great fun, but now I'm not so sure anymore. I just hope NASA decides to go with Serenity after all

1) It's just the advertising contract that Hulu (and other sites) have. Don't blame them, blame... um... basic tenets of economics.
2) Were you mad at NASA when they had the significantly less cool name of "Node3"? Are you mad at every space name you find less appealing than Serenity? And are you now mad at democracy?

re 1): I don't blame Hulu. I just said I won't be visiting them again. If they don't want to expand their advertisements beyond the borders of the USA, I guess that makes both me and Hulu happy, though i think in their case (and that of their advertisers) it is pretty dumb.

re 2): Are you being serious? I assume you are not, yet I will respond like you are. I am not mad at NASA for putting names that are less cool than "Serenity" on the list. "Node3" looks to me like some joke that someone inside NASA tried to get on the list and it worked, never stood a chance though. I am not a huge Firefly fanboy, but as i said, the name "Serenity" fits well with the other nodes' names already up there, Firefly is a cool show and we've had other show SF shows that served as an inspiration for names of spacecraft. Colbert, no matter how cool I think his show and the character he portrays is, is not a good name for this new nodule.

I am mad at democracy very often though, so you are right there. Sadly it's the system of government with the least worst outcome of any we've come up with so far, so I guess I'll stick with it until something better comes along.

During the contest, I discovered that NASA had seriously screwed up the programming of the poll. I was even able to build a votebot, getting around the CRAPTCHA NASA had set up on the word verification.

I found out a neat amount of info NASA was hiding from the public inside their poorly written Javascript, including the number of votes submitted for write-ins or for given options.

I was able to calculate that Serenity received 185916 votes against Colbert got 230539 votes, affirming that Colbert was way out in the lead.

You won't see that first number in the AP release!

Meh, 4623±1328 votes is not a small margin of error. Either way, I was rather amazed by NASA's stupidity.

Obviously NASA has forgotten to convert the vote total from English to metric.

The success of "Colbert" reminds me of eighth grade, when we voted a girl who never talked to anybody as "most popular".

That's a terrible comparison. It's more like voting for the most popular girl in your school, and then another school, with a bigger population comes in and uses the write in to vote for the most popular person at their school.
