Zeus takes out giant statue of Jesus

...or possibly it was Thor.

MONROE, Ohio - The famous King of Kings statue at the Solid Rock Church in Monroe is no longer after a fire destroyed the popular landmark Monday night.

The 62-foot tall statue of Jesus constructed out of styrofoam, wood and fiberglass resin caught on fire after the right hand of the statue was struck by lightning during the severe thunderstorms around 11:15 p.m.

The only thing left of the 16,000 pound statue is the metal frame.

My guess is the ancient Greek (Norse?) god was upset at how much attention his more recent rival was receiving.

Whats funny is that these sorts of events are what 'proves' that god exists to some people - even more so if it happened 2000 years ago. If this happened in biblical times they'd assume god caused it and have some sort of law banning statues of jesus.

Lets hope that some people realize that is equally strong proof that the lord isn't Christian as the evidence in the bible.

Nah, God's pissed because Jesus is supposed to be walking -on- the water, not chest deep in it.

Obviously it's a sign that they need to try again with a taller lightning r..err.. metal frame.

The statue was kinda asking for it, with such a pose.

Let's hope that when they rebuild it, they'll also add a lightning conductor of some sort, to prevent this from happening again.

The first thing I thought upon seeing this was "where's your god now?"

If I wasn't already bound for hell, that would have done it. (Assuming I'm wrong and it exists that is)

I feel as though this happened because we clearly ignored this warning shot fired against the cabrini shrine in Colorado in '07. Lightning really has it out for Jesus.

What is the difference between an idol and a statue?

Edit: That is, can one have a religious statue that is not an idol?

A statue of a deity is an idol. Period.

And the Lord said, "There be an idol, let us go down and make some lulz." And the Lord and His hosts lol'd.

i think the difference between an idol and a statue is what you do with said statue. i think if you're worshiping the statue as the deity (i.e. bowing down to a statue and praying to a statue instead of the deity that the statue represents) then it's an idol. if it's a statue of a deity, but no body worships the statue itself as a deity then it's a statue

Maybe if Jesus showed better form as a goal tender his dad wouldn't be so pissed off. Jesus should just be glad he doesn't play for Columbia. They'd have crucified him and made it stick.

Ancient people knew to make their statues out of God-damn stone. They deserve it for making one out styrofoam (flammable), wood (usually flammable), and fiberglass (oftentimes, the resin is highly flammable), that even has a built-in lightning rod.

You forgot about the metal frame to have it act as a lightning rod.

And apparently they're going to build a replacement thats BIGGER!

So ... is this some kind of overcompensation on someone's part? Is somebody having problems performing in church? Flaccid in their faith?

... I don't completely recall, weren't such extravagant displays generally frowned on by Mr. Jesus? Didn't he think the money and resources could.. I don't know.. Help the poor or something?
