Time Traveler in Chaplin Film

Postby Wnderer » Thu Oct 28, 2010 5:38 pm UTC

A woman in the background of a Chaplin film apparently talking on a cell phone/ walkie-talkie/ communicator type device.
I love the comments about there being no cellular phone service in 1928. Like time travelers use Verizon.

the more logical answer is that she's an alien, not a time traveler.

the whole thing is absurd, cnn has gone downhill =\

No, they will be little jewel-like badges worn on your chest which you only have to hit once and then it magically knows who you want to talk to.

I hate that show.
This human interest story is so boring, there's nothing to be outraged about. I was hoping that some islamophobe would mistake a gay man for a muslim and stomp on his head while screaming out anti-liberal tirades. Then when the gay man returns to school, the school would force the now gay cheerleader to cheer his assaulter during the big game...

Maybe that is happening, but through time travel.

I for one am extremely upset about the negative sterotypes about time travelers being portrayed in this movie. Time travelers are much more awesome than that person. There's even an awesome test you have to take. Why do you think most of the Time Lords got wiped out? Failed the awesome test.

I don't see why it would be odd to have a large device. Obviously conspicuous, but I would assume a time-traveler's communications device would need to be fairly large. Have you seen the size of tachyon transceivers these days? -erm, I mean I bet they'll be pretty big. And I bet half the size is a cold fusion battery pack. I know I wouldn't want to take my little cell phone back to the 1500's with it's 10-hour-when-you-never-touch-it battery life.

Well, they'll start time travelling as soon as the technology is portable. Miniaturisation will come afterwards. In the future, unminiaturised appliances will be about the size of miniaturised ones today. So, it must be true. Obviously.

Meanwhile, somewhere in reality...

There are a number of hearing aid devices about that size, like this Ear Trumpet, as well as some of the earliest electric hearing aids were in production.
We're in the traffic-chopper over the XKCD boards where there's been a thread-derailment. A Liquified Godwin spill has evacuated threads in a fourty-post radius of the accident, Lolcats and TVTropes have broken free of their containers. It is believed that the Point has perished.

More importantly...

Who is this magical time traveller calling and how are they getting signal?

Obviously it's a temporal mobile phone that can call back to the future. That's why it's so bulky as to require being held to her ear.

Of course when (totally when not if) we invent time travel we'll be using mobile phones that look just like the ones we use now.

Plus our time travelers will expend a lot of effort to match the fashion of the time period they're traveling to. And will then carry around futuristic devices in public.

If I were a timetraveller, I would have at least gone for a bluetooth headset.

The Doctor. Which is also how they got a signal.

No it looked like an old lady.

So it was the Doctor's companion.

But the Doctor's companions are invariably young ladies, not old ladies.

It must be either the Doctor or his companion, in disguise.

Maybe it's a publicity stunt to build promotion for the DVD? Maybe?

I truly hope so. That I could cope with. Otherwise I may well have to lose what little respect I have left for all the news channels that bothered reporting this.

I talk to time travellers all the time. They are quite common. Although I cannot get my device to exceed 1 second every second. It's also stuck in "forward".
It's all physics and stamp collecting.
It's not a particle or a wave. It's just an exchange.

But that's still missing the point that you're assuming AT&T's service has improved between now and when the time traveler left; however, based on evidence, that's a very wishful assumption you're making.

"when" has a complicated meaning in relation to time travel.

Given how the ear trumpet appears to be the same size and shape as the average Cell Phone, I'd say that it's the most likely possiblity.

Also, CNN must be having a slow news day...despite the fact that it's the freakin' Primaries today...

Edit: As of now, we can confirm that the cellular device was an ear trumpet. Sorry, Doctor Who fans.
