I don't know to what extent this is actually "news", but it did warrant an article in the CBC...
reddit.com bans 150,000+ subscriber "Fat People Hate" subreddit (among a couple others) for harassment. Users throw tantrums all over the site, mostly aimed at Reddit CEO Ellen Pao. All yesterday evening was a mad race between FPHers establishing new subreddits and reddit admins banning them (where "them" refers both to the new subreddits and the user accounts). At one point, the "punchablefaces" subreddit was filled with pages and pages of pictures of Pao, before the one remaining mod of that subreddit woke up and scrubbed it all. Leaving aside the actual subject matter, it's interesting to watch the power play between site administration and a fairly large and very vocal group of dissatisfied users. https://xkcd.com/1357/ has been generously bandied around.

Edit: additional articles

I always wonder how large a group like that is. Vocal, yes, extremely. But GG for example worked extremely hard to inflate its presence by creating a bunch of fake accounts, and I'm sure things like this already had people with multiple accounts for the purpose of trolling. Hard to say. The internet is a fascinating place of obfuscation.

If 150k people subscribed, I think it's safe to describe it as fairly large. Yeah, once things get politcized and the fights happen, dirty tricks happen to inflate numbers, but I think the before-that time is a decentish estimate.

Maybe not all of those subscribers are mad about it, mind. But even a decent subset of that is a pretty big group.

In all honesty, I'm not really concerned about the free speech angle. The voting based visibility system means that popular opinions get more votes on a given subreddit, which attracts people with those views, making those opinions more likely to get upvoted in the future. Reddit's model is practically the definition of 'Echo Chamber'. Sure, banning these subreddits potentially changes the method in which my illusory free speech is limited, but other limits were already there.

Regardless, I don't go to reddit for free speech, I go there for video game news and pictures of cats. My quality of life is untouched by the current drama.

Reading the article carefully it appears that the legal claim is that Ebay did collect commission, but didn't pass on the payments, which seems like a pretty good cause of a lawsuit to me (prima facie).

As for buying plots of land on celestial objects, I suspect that when such claims actually become relevant (i.e. we can actually get to said celestial objects) a lot of people are going to be introduced to the age-old legal principle of Acquiris Quodcumquae Rapis

If it were simply that a white person was the head of the NAACP, I don't think there'd be an issue (although it'd be quite odd). The fact she apparently misrepresented her identity and identified herself as black is more of the problem.

As expected, I saw this posted on Facebook from some friends... and the first comment was "If Bruce Jenner can be Caitlyn, why can't she be black?"

I wish I had the wherewithal to explain why that's not quite the same thing.

Ah, sonofabitch, now there's a bunch of them saying "BRUCE JENNER WILL ALWAYS BE A MAN BECAUSE HE HAS XY CHROMOSOMES. YOU CAN'T DENY GENETICS." I'm out.

EDIT: "What, transgender is OK but transracial is suddenly forbidden? They're the same thing!"

I'm not convinced that it isn't quite the same thing. Mature people have gotten beyond conflating transgenderism and feminism (or are using Caityn Jenner as the catalyst to do so). Here is an editorial claiming (among many other things) that Jenner doesn't have the right or the experience to do anything more than pretend to be a woman, so it is certainly an argument that both stories have to confront.

I've never heard of transracialism before now, but it's probably no less of a legitimate condition. If Rachel Dolezol sincerely identifies as African-American but lacks the requisite drop of blood, it's not clear to me that society has a moral imperative to bleach and straighten her hair.

ETA: LOL, you stealth-edited. I feel inclined to leave this because I think it is a reasonable position that some people on the intertubes seem to be claiming. It may be a legitimate claim -- transracialism would almost certainly be a completely social response while transgenderism is probably affected by your genetics and hormonal systems. (I have not checked the research on this.) But it feels to me like something we could accommodate.

"If Bruce Jenner always wanted to be a woman why did he participate at the highest level of male athletics?"

"If my tits get cut off and my vag sewed shut, am I not a woman anymore? Ugh I hate people in this day and age all the Basic Human Decency and poor minorities. Blah blah blah. Let's find some real issues like the fact our president is a Muslim and a killer may be our next president, because vagina. Ahhhhh fuck!"

"She can't be black, her damn melanin in her skin doesn't allow for it, holy fuck, Bruce can't be female, his chromosomes scream man. Can they pretend. Yep, but when stripped down to science, no. Liberals are assholes anyways."

"Not hating, these people deserve love still, but that's my opinion."

There was a time when light skinned multiracial people 'passed' as white.
If a light skinned person could 'pass' as white, they could live a fuller life.

My mother had wildly curly hair and blue/blue eyes.
As a child, I heard people say she was part black.

A child does not need to hear that very many times.
As a child, I was undecided. I'd look at her and wonder.

I liked thinking I might be a little black.
(shrug) Maybe, I am. It doesn't show.

My grandmother was a racist.
She would get furious.
Poor thing.

If that woman lives a full life as a multiracial woman,
and, if she does good things in the world...
What the hell do you care??

She might have the 'Drop of Blood'.
Are the people that are outing her racists?
Are they part black And racists? It happens.

I think the real question is why you're friends with these people. Or are you just browsing comments from general stories or something? Because youtube should probably have taught ya not to do that if you want to keep your sanity.

Can't speak for Jalapeno, but for me it's absolutely necessary; my social and professional lives (which for reasons beyond my control are intertwined) depend on Facebook. If you are not there, you will not be invited to things (more as a result of human lack of thoughtfulness than malice). But it means I see their friends' shitty opinions.

Well, 80% of our water usage is for Agriculture (which is 2% of our economy), not golf courses, but golf courses have been hit by restrictions already, and even before that many used reclaimed water from sewage treatment plants which was not destined to be drinking water.

So lawmakers in Louisiana have figured out how to increase revenue without increasing taxes:

http://www.salon.com/2015/06/15/bobby_j ... _this_one/

So first they charge a $1500 fee for university students (for a total of $350 million in fees), then they give those exact same students the money back in tax credits (for a total of $350 million in tax credits), then they raise taxes by $350 million to pay for the tax credits. Now, the tax credits and the tax increases cancel out, and all you are left with are the fees, and since they are fees they are not taxes then you can say you didn't raise taxes.

I'd argue that they should be allowed to make claim to the heritage, although culturally this doesn't seem to happen in practice.

I don't know if it's because the defendant seems so ridiculous (that quote's wording was brilliant, if erroneous), or because the BBC's style of reporting seems so out of place for this story.

And I'm just shaking my head.

He can't be fired in the 2016 elections. He's retiring, by mandate.

Apologies, but Alan "hey call me Lord" Sugar is infinetely bad. The man who turned the innovative UK IT industry into his cheap Poundland market stall deserves nothing but contempt. In other news, utterly unwatchable nob takes over from amusing twat to kill another BBC2 series. Ok, I may be a little biased against Chris the dick Evans, and I may (possibly) have had a drink, but I can guaranty I'll never watch the next series of Top Gear.

Chris Evans was a popular breakfast TV presenter in the early-90s, and then transitioned into being a very popular radio DJ. He was host of BBC Radio 1's flagship show until he had an argument with the producers and moved to a commercial station for several years, and now presents on Radio 2. Most of the TV work he's done for the last 10 years has been a complete failure, but he's still quite popular as a radio host. I enjoyed his shows in the 90s, as a kid, but I don't think I'd like that stuff now.

Clarkson's a bigotted fuckface and my realisation of that is a big part of why I stopped watching top gear, but this seems like an odd move from the bbc's pov. Chris Evans is the sort of presenter they had on top gear before the clarkson era back when it had fairly poor ratings. If they're planning to let it quietly fizzle out as a show, fine; but like this, if they're bringing in a "brand new lineup", I can't see how they'll keep the ratings.
my pronouns are they
