Explosion in Oslo

Postby casoid » Fri Jul 22, 2011 2:50 pm UTC

Article - BBC

Spoiler:
A large explosion has hit near government headquarters in the Norwegian capital Oslo.

The blast is thought to have caused damage to the offices of Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and a number of other official buildings.

Initial reports suggested Mr Stoltenberg was unharmed.

At least eight people were injured in the city centre explosion, local media reports. No-one has said they were behind the attack.

Television footage from the scene showed rubble and glass from shattered windows in the streets - smoke was around some buildings. The wreckage of at least one car was in street.

All roads into the city centre have been closed, said the NRK newspaper.

Oistein Mjarum, head of communications for the Norwegian Red Cross, said his offices were close to the blast.

"There was a massive explosion which could be heard over the capital Oslo."
Map

Mr Mjarum said there were fires burning in the 17-storey prime minister's building.

Eyewitness Ole Tommy Pedersen said he was standing at a bus stop about 100m away from the blast.

"I saw three or four injured people being carried out of the building a few minutes later," Mr Pedersen told AP.

He said there was a cloud of smoke billowing from the lower floors.

An NRK journalist, Ingunn Andersen, said the headquarters of tabloid newspaper VG had also been damaged.

"I see that some windows of the VG building and the government headquarters have been broken. Some people covered with blood are lying in the street," Associated Press news agency quoted him as saying.

"It's complete chaos here. The windows are blown out in all the buildings close by."

This a new one. Unexpected bomb targeting high-level government offices... any ideas as to who and why? Nobody has claimed responsibility, but Norway is part of ISAF and has had ~400 personnel in Afghanistan for years now, which may be a factor. Not that Norway is a hotbed of Islamic extremism; it may be of criminal origin or perhaps from some sort of home-grown nutters.

Some injuries, though so far no word on fatalities. Hopefully none.

It went off on a Friday afternoon.

City center is being evacuated.

Police are searching people going to/from the airport.

PM is safe.

Oslo does not have gas lines.

Two confirmed deaths + 15 injuries.

At least five people have been shot there. The gunman is dressed as a police officer. (source: http://www.sydsvenskan.se/varlden/artic ... Norge.html)

The bomb went off in the area where the government is housed and the youth camp belongs to the Labour party, which is the main party in the current government coalition.
The gunman was apparently dressed as a policeman.

This is scary as hell. My mother is passing through Oslo on her way home. She's safe on a plane home now.

Swedish newspapers report at least seven dead in the explosion, plus (and this is where this gets truly horrifiyng/fucked up) another 25-30 killed in a shooting at a political youth orginization meeting not far from the capital just a short while after the bomb went off in Oslo. A man dressed as a policeman entered the camp and said he was there as routine because of the bombing. Then he opened fire and killed 30 people.

The number of dead at the youth camp hasn't been confirmed in Norwegian media yet. So far we've heard 5-10, then later 25-30.
7 confirmed in the explosion in Oslo though.

The shooter at the camp is reported to be apprehended and is believed to be connected to the bomb that went off.

Norway is where the sane people are.

Hey! We all have a little something that we hang onto.
The idea of Norway and those other sweet sane nations up there in the cold was mine.

I am so sorry that this has happened to Norway.

Does anyone know why it happened? Homegrown nutter?

The shooter is currently being interrogated by the police. Some sources claim there were multiple shooters though.

He's confirmed to be Norwegian by the minister of justice, and early reports said he both looked and spoke Norwegian too.

No word on the motive yet though. There are speculations about it being an extreme right wing sort of thing though.

According to minister of justice five minutes ago, the perpetrator arrested at Utøya is "Norwegian". Whether that means "ethnically Norwegian" or "Norwegian citizen" was not specified. Unverified claims state he has a "Nordic" appearance, and spoke Norwegian. But really, there's been a lot of rumormongering in Norwegian media all day.

Other claims (not verified, but from relatively respected media):
- Police does not believe this is a international terrorist group.
- The person dressed up as police at Utøya might have been observed in Oslo not long before the explosion (the two locations are rather close). (THIS IS NOW VERIFIED)

A guy I know was interviewed in my local paper (Norwegian): http://www.adressa.no/nyheter/innenriks ... 665596.ece
Essentials: They got into a boat, and got some distance between themselves and the pier when the gunman comes running, opening fire with an automatic weapon. They lie down in the boat, which keeps drifting, and the gunman returns to the island. A little later they're picked up by another boat.

17 kills is latest figure, of which 10 on Utøya.

They were hardly more than kids, dammit.

We're usually quite happy about listing the heritage of the perps when they're not ethnically Norwegian, so the lack of any qualifier seems to me to suggest he's not brown people.

The people on the camp were mainly part of the youth socialist organisations and the government is also socialist in majority. There is speculation this being the work of other far right extremists, not islamists.

We have idiots too!

Remember the church burning of the nineties? A fine example of Norwegian idiocy.

A Finn on the intertubes linked me to this btw: http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/iriks ... 231455.ece
I found it quite interesting.

Too Norwegian; didn't read: Police arrested a guy with guns, a bomb and some police uniforms roughly ten years ago. He was 23 and a bit of a neo-nazi.

It was more than a single church right? Was anyone accused of arson other than Varg Vikernes?

The police held a press conference an hour or so ago. It's in all Norwegian media, but then I expect they're all working around the clock on this, as it's sort of a big deal here. I'm sure foreign press will adjust in the morning.

Wait, how does a single gunman murder 80+ people? That's a lot of ammunition and reloading, especially considering that most people don't die from 1 shot, not to mention everyone running in different directions. Apparently he had a handgun, shotgun, and an 'automatic weapon'. The largest in history (not counting this) was 57, in South Korea with 2 assault rifles and hand grenades.

Oh, looking online it says he asked people to gather round first. Bastard.

Looks like it's officially up to 84 dead on the island. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14259356

I'm finding this pretty creepy, it looks like he set the bomb as a diversion...

Too horrible for words. Still have friends missing, they've started identification of those killed but no info released yet so it's still quite chaotic. Definitely a time to keep our heads cool and our hearts warm. Anyone in the Oslo area with 0- blood type, go donate blood asap!
